Several founders of quantum mechanics explicitly engaged with Vedic and Buddhist philosophy because these traditions offered conceptual frameworks that made the counterintuitive nature of quantum reality more intelligible.
Schrödinger drew directly from Advaita Vedānta; Heisenberg said Indian philosophy helped him accept quantum indeterminacy; Bohr used non-dualistic ideas to articulate complementarity; Gödel’s incompleteness resonated with Buddhist emptiness; and Planck’s belief in the primacy of consciousness echoed Vedic metaphysics.
They were not “influenced” in a scientific sense — but they found in Eastern traditions philosophical allies for the worldview implied by quantum theory.
Schrödinger is the clearest and strongest link.
He read the Upanishads extensively and said they expressed the only metaphysics compatible with modern physics.

Atman = Brahman → the individual self is identical with the universal consciousness.Schrödinger’s interpretation of quantum mechanics:

This is pure Upanishadic non-dualism.
Quantum mechanics dissolves the idea of isolated particles with fixed properties. Schrödinger saw this as a physical reflection of the Vedantic insight that all distinctions are provisional.
Heisenberg did not derive his theory from Eastern texts, but he openly acknowledged that Indian philosophy helped him accept the implications of quantum mechanics.
He said that after speaking with Rabindranath Tagore:
“Some of the ideas of quantum physics that seemed so crazy suddenly made sense.”
Buddhist emptiness (śūnyatā):

“I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness.”
This is astonishingly close to:
Vedanta: Consciousness (Brahman) is the ground of reality.
Yogācāra Buddhism: Mind is the fundamental substrate of experience.
Planck’s view is not “New Age”; it is a sober metaphysical inference from physics.
Gödel is not a quantum physicist, but his work is philosophically adjacent and deeply relevant.
No formal system can be complete; every system contains truths it cannot prove.
No conceptual system can ground itself; all views collapse under analysis; reality is empty of inherent essence.
The parallel is structural:
Gödel shows the limits of logic.
Buddhism shows the limits of conceptualization.
Both dismantle the Western assumption that reality can be fully captured by rational systems.
Because quantum mechanics shattered classical metaphysics:
No solid particles
No fixed properties
No independent observer
No objective reality without measurement
No complete logical system (Gödel)
Western philosophy had no tools for this.
But the Vedas and Buddhism had been exploring:
Non-duality
Emptiness
Observer-dependent reality
The primacy of consciousness
The limits of conceptual thought
for 2,500 years.
Quantum mechanics forced physicists into territory where Eastern metaphysics had already built conceptual maps.
