From its iconic opening line, “Good morning, Mr. Phelps,” to each high-stakes mission, the 1960s TV series Mission: Impossible portrayed American espionage drama at its finest. Each Impossible Mission Force assignment was meticulously planned using cutting-edge gadgets, strategy, and disguises. Each week I waited to see Mr. Phelps open the manila envelope, take out the recorded message tape, and listen to the mission’s description—always knowing he would choose to accept it. But my favorite part was watching the recording device self-destruct after its message played. The covert team always succeeded, ensuring that the world was a safer place.

The reality of special operations is far more somber than Mission: Impossible depicted. Nations rely on special ops for security and to protect their interests. Such is the case for Israel, the only nation God called into the world of espionage. In Numbers 13, God instructed Moses, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel” (v. 2). Before Joshua led the children of Israel into Canaan, he “sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, ‘Go, view the land, especially Jericho’” (Josh. 2:1). Generations later, God instructed Gideon and his servant Purah to spy on the Midianites (Judg. 7:9–15).

Days of Noah: Why America Is Beginning to Identify with the Perpetrator

Something deeply disturbing is happening in American culture. We are witnessing a moral inversion in which sympathy increasingly migrates away from the victim and toward the person who harmed the victim. To me, the Days of Noah warning from the Messiah is here. The perpetrator becomes the person society is asked to understand, explain, defend, fund, and sometimes even celebrate, while the actual victim slowly disappears from the story. We are told about the offender’s trauma, mental illness, oppression, fear, diagnosis, upbringing, medications, identity, or circumstances. Some of those things may be completely real and deserve serious consideration. But somewhere in the process, explanation has begun replacing accountability.

Virtually everyone agrees that our public schools are in a state of decline. Needless to say, it isn’t because we aren’t spending enough money. The federal government, our state governments and our local governments are collectively spending nearly a trillion dollars a year on public education. That is a colossal pile of money. Since 1960, spending per student has increased by 350 percent. That is even after adjusting for inflation. At this stage, we spend more money per student than any other nation on the entire planet other than Luxembourg. Anyone that believes that we can solve our education crisis by spending even more money is simply being delusional.

For nearly a trillion dollars a year, we should be getting a world class education system.

But we aren’t.

In fact, students in the U.S. just keep dropping down the global rankings.

Urgent action is required if we are going to turn this around.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently declared that Democratic Socialists are “fundamentally pro-democracy,” believe in the ballot box and respect election results. Sounds comforting. Yes, American socialists believe in elections because elections provide the means to obtain the political power necessary to implement their agenda. The real test comes afterward. Socialism requires increasing government control over economic resources and production, even freedom of speech and free exercise of religion. History demonstrates that when government controls the economy, it eventually possesses enormous leverage over the people who depend upon it. That is where the sales pitch collides with reality.

In Russia, Lenin’s Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, and later dissolved the elected Constituent Assembly. Castro’s revolutionary movement overthrew Cuba’s government in 1959. Mao’s Communists prevailed through civil war. But what followed demonstrates the danger of concentrating political and economic power. Private property was confiscated, industries and agriculture came under state control, and political opposition became dangerous. The Soviet Union produced purges, executions and forced-labor camps. Mao’s collectivization and Great Leap Forward produced catastrophic famine, with scholarly estimates ranging from 15 million to 45 million deaths. Castro’s Cuba became a communist state where opponents were imprisoned, exiled and executed. Government became master rather than servant.

The human cost of communism in the last century is staggering. The Black Book of Communism famously estimated the worldwide toll at approaching 100 million deaths. Tens of millions died through executions, forced collectivization, famine, labor camps, deportations and political repression across communist regimes. Mao’s Great Leap Forward stands among history’s greatest policy-driven catastrophes. Stalin’s Soviet government used terror and purges to eliminate perceived enemies. In Cuba, revolutionary authorities conducted executions after Castro seized power, and Human Rights Watch reports that nearly 700 political prisoners remained behind bars as of October 2025. These governments promised equality and liberation. Their people received censorship, coercion, imprisonment and death.

The Democratic Socialists of America, embraced by the Democratic Party, openly rejects an economic order based on private profit and advocates collective ownership of key economic sectors as part of a “transition” toward socialism. Americans should take them at their word and judge their promises against history. Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” Liberty requires limited government, private property, free speech and accountability. Anyone believing socialism guarantees freedom, prosperity and life while glossing over its bloody history is, say it with me… practicing Stupidocrisy.

One of God’s perfections is His omnipresence. He is present everywhere all the time. The psalmist captured the essence and implications of God’s omnipresence when he wrote, “I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me” (Psalm 139:7–10 NLT).

If we extend that line of reasoning, it’s not hard to see that the omnipresence of God can be comforting or frightening, depending on your perspective. If you’re not right with God and you’re trying to get away from Him, His omnipresence creates a huge obstacle. The Old Testament prophet Jonah could testify to that.

God gave Jonah an assignment that Jonah found distasteful. The Lord wanted Jonah to warn the Ninevites that His judgment was coming if they didn’t repent. Jonah balked at the mission because the Ninevites were the enemies of Israel. He didn’t want them to repent. He was rooting for God’s judgment on them. So, he went down to Joppa and boarded a ship headed for Tarshish, away from Nineveh and presumably away from God. But you know how the story ends. Jonah recognized the error of his ways and repented in the belly of a giant fish. Because God was there, too.

There’s an obvious lesson in there for anyone who’s trying to run from God. That is, you’re wasting your time and energy. It can’t be done. No matter where you go, God will be waiting for you. You can’t escape His presence.

On the other hand, if you’re walking with God, you’ll find great comfort in the knowledge that you’re never alone. When you face fiery trials, when you go through times of difficulty, when you have to weather life’s storms, God is with you every step of the way.

David memorably celebrated God’s presence in Psalm 23: “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me” (verses 1–4 NLT).

You never need feel lost, scared, abandoned, or alone. If you’re walking with God, He will never leave you.
