It doesn’t matter who controls Syria—whether it’s the Assad regime or now Ahmed al-Sharaa—we know Biblically that there has to be a future cataclysmic event that will cause Damascus to cease from being a city (Isaiah 17:1). Knowing this, one eye has to always stay on what’s going on in Syria.

The situation in the nation remains turbulent. It’s not as though Syrian leadership became saints once Assad fell.

A few days ago, Syrian Arab Army chants were heard from the Grand Mosque in Damascus, shouting, “A storm has risen! Rain down destruction in the heat of battle! Coming for you, Jew, I am coming at you like a mountain of fire! Making ammunition for you out of my own body! Making rivers out of your blood! Allahu Akbar!”

For generations, students of Bible prophecy have asked a fascinating question about Revelation 13:15. How could the Antichrist and False Prophet possibly know whether someone, anywhere in the world, actually bowed down and worshiped the image of the Beast—or refused to do so?

Revelation 13,17, and 18 describe an unprecedented system of global political, religious, and economic control. The False Prophet will cause an image of the Antichrist to be constructed and will demand that the world worship it.

Revelation 13:15 says: “He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.”

Notice what the text says. Those who do not worship the image are identified and killed. That raises an obvious practical question. How would the system know? For most of human history, accomplishing something like this on a massive scale would have seemed almost impossible. Not anymore.

Imagine a world where artificial intelligence no longer depends upon the traditional power grid. Its computers could operate hundreds of miles offshore, floating autonomously in the ocean. They could generate their own electricity from waves, cool themselves with seawater, and communicate with the rest of civilization through satellites. Meanwhile, above the earth, thousands of orbiting mirrors could redirect sunlight toward selected locations after sunset, extending the usefulness of solar power beyond the normal boundaries of daylight.

This is not a scene from a science-fiction movie. Both technologies are being developed today. Two companies in particular, Reflect Orbital and Panthalassa, are pursuing technologies that demonstrate how radically the infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence could change.

We are facing a global energy crisis, a global debt crisis and a global inflation crisis all at the same time. In all my years, I have never seen anything like this. Two of China’s largest shipping companies just decided to stop sending their oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Meanwhile, diesel prices are heading into the stratosphere with no end in sight. Supplies of diesel fuel are going to get so tight during the months ahead. At the same time, bond yields are surging as the global debt crisis escalates. The U.S. national debt is about to hit 40 trillion dollars and the debt to GDP ratio in Japan is nearing 250 percent. We are caught in a global debt spiral that is out of control, and inflation has become a major issue all over the planet. Anyone that thinks that there is an easy answer to all of these problems is just being delusional.

The Democratic Socialists of America has been remarkably candid about its destination. Its National Electoral Commission says electoral organizing helps build working-class political power “in order to win socialism.” DSA candidates are using the Democratic Party ballot line. That presents Democrats with this important question: Is the party openly providing the electoral infrastructure through which an organized socialist movement can accumulate political power? Current law protects peaceful political organization and electoral advocacy. Yet Americans should understand what is happening before them. Socialism does not need to storm Washington when voters can be persuaded to carry it through the front door.

Federal law already recognizes a boundary between political advocacy and revolutionary activity. The Smith Act, 18 U.S.C. §2385, criminalizes certain advocacy and organization involving overthrow or destruction of government by force or violence. Supreme Court precedent protects abstract political advocacy unless it is directed toward producing imminent lawless action and likely to produce such action. Consequently, organizing voters to peacefully elect socialists is protected political activity. That raises a different and increasingly relevant question: Is it time for America to examine whether movements seeking to replace essential characteristics of our constitutional republic should be able to accomplish peacefully through the ballot what they could never lawfully accomplish through force?

The Constitution itself provides an intriguing foundation for that discussion. Article IV requires the United States to guarantee every state a “Republican Form of Government.” Article V permits sweeping constitutional amendments while prohibiting a state from being deprived of equal Senate representation without its consent. The Founders therefore understood that political processes themselves required boundaries. What happens if Americans someday elect leaders committed to with enough power to undermine the Constitutional Republic? The question reaches far beyond Democrats, Republicans or DSA. It concerns whether a constitutional republic possesses sufficient safeguards against its own lawful dismantling. Until that debate occurs, the greatest safeguard remains “We the People.”

Americans determine who receives political power, and every election carries consequences. Freedom-loving Americans should examine candidates, their endorsements, affiliated organizations, financial supporters and stated political objectives. Then they must register, show up and vote. A constitutional republic ultimately depends upon citizens who understand what they possess and recognize movements seeking to fundamentally change it. Political freedom even gives people tremendous latitude to make choices that may diminish future freedom. That makes responsible citizenship more important than ever. Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” America still places tremendous power in the hands of its citizens. Freedom still has a vote. Use it.

In the Old Testament we find an interesting story of how King Jehoshaphat took an uncommon approach when his enemies waged war against him. “After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang: ‘Give thanks to the Lord; his faithful love endures forever!’” (2 Chronicles 20:21 NLT).

Imagine the scene: “All right, guys, here’s the plan today. The enemy soldiers are out there, armed to the teeth. So, our first wave of attack will be musical. We’re sending out the choir.” If I’d been one of those choir members, I might have wondered whether the king liked our music. But God had directed Jehoshaphat in this unusual battle tactic.

The result was nothing short of amazing. “At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves. The armies of Moab and Ammon turned against their allies from Mount Seir and killed every one of them. After they had destroyed the army of Seir, they began attacking each other. So when the army of Judah arrived at the lookout point in the wilderness, all they saw were dead bodies lying on the ground as far as they could see. Not a single one of the enemy had escaped” (verses 22–24 NLT).

Good things happen when God’s people prioritize thanking and praising the Lord. It’s a simple lesson, but one that’s shockingly easy to forget.

Luke 17:11–19 tells the story of Jesus’ encounter with ten men who had leprosy. When the men saw Jesus approaching their village, they cried out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (verse 13 NLT). And with a single instruction from Him, the men were healed. Their leprosy disappeared. Their lives were changed forever.

Verse 15 says, “One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, ‘Praise God!’” (NLT). One out of ten thanked Jesus. That percentage surprised even the Lord Himself.

“Jesus asked, ‘Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?’” (verses 17–18 NLT).

It’s not so much that Jesus was offended by the inconsiderate reactions of the other nine; it was more of a concern that they were going to miss out on the blessings that come when people express their thanks to God.

Of course, few of us would dare shake our heads at the lack of response from the inconsiderate nine. If we could do an inventory of the number of times God has answered our prayers and then compare that to the number of times we’ve thanked Him, we probably would cringe at the results.

The psalmist wrote, “Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them” (Psalm 107:8 NLT).

Let that be our daily priority.
