The tension between war and peace in the Middle East is mind-boggling at times. Just when we think President Trump is about to order a massive wave of bombing against Iran, we wake up the next day to learn he has called off the attack.

On the other hand, the ceasefires never last. Despite the highly publicized Memorandum of Understanding for peace, attacks and bombings resumed shortly after its signing.

As students of Bible prophecy, we have a unique understanding of what’s happening in the conflict between Israel, Iran, and the proxies of the Persian state. We know that the battle is spiritual. Because Satan motivates Israel’s enemies, lasting peace will never happen until Jesus returns to the earth. The anti-Zion passion will remain alive and well inside Iran until the nation’s demise at the end of the Gog/Magog war (see Ezekiel 38-39).

Reflecting on my life, I can recount a series of wars that have transpired. I was born during the Vietnam conflict and came of age in the Cold War. In fact, my own initial training in the Air Force was focused on the great Soviet threat, and my POW training was based on the American experience in Vietnam.

While I was in high school, America first became embroiled in the Middle East unrest fomented by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Then, I watched as small conflicts erupted closer to home in Panama and even Grenada. Other skirmishes followed in places like Libya, Kosovo, and Somalia. By the early 1990s, even as the Cold War cooled, the focus turned once again to the Middle East, with multiple wars centered on Iraq and then Afghanistan. My own combat experience came over the deserts and mountains of both of those forlorn nations.

The world is watching several countdown clocks right now-and some of them may reach zero at almost exactly the same time.

From Iran to Gaza, from oil markets to U.S. elections, the final months of 2026 are shaping up to be unusually volatile. None of these pressure points guarantees a wider war or economic crisis. But taken together, they create a dangerous convergence that could make this fall one of the most consequential periods in years.

The first clock is ticking in Iran.

Iranian officials have warned that if their demands are not met within the coming weeks, Tehran could shift from its current posture toward something far more aggressive against the United States and Israel.

That threat matters because the confrontation is no longer confined to nuclear negotiations. It now touches the Strait of Hormuz, oil exports, sanctions, American naval forces, regional proxy groups and the possibility of renewed Israeli military action.

This has been one of the craziest years in any of our lifetimes. World War III is literally playing out right in front of our eyes, this has been the worst year for wildfires that the western half of the country has experienced, severe hunger is on the rise all over the globe, the Ebola outbreak in Africa is now the second largest of all time, and we just continue to get hammered by one natural disaster after another. This is what a “perfect storm” looks like, and it just keeps intensifying.

In 2020, 10.27 million acres burned in the United States, and that established a brand new record.

In 2026, we are on pace to absolutely smash that old record.

Through August 18th, more than 7.2 million acres have already burned in the United States.

We are way ahead of the pace set in 2020.

In fact, we are way ahead of the pace of any of the last 10 years.

The Democratic Socialists of America says it rejects an economic order based on private profit and seeks “popular control of resources and production” and economic planning. Its affiliated DSA Fund identifies itself as a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to political education and says it invests in projects helping “build a democratic socialist future.” Here is the rub: Americans certainly possess the constitutional freedom to advocate various causes. Yet tax exemption is something different. It is a privilege created by government, supported indirectly by taxpayers. Why should government grant special financial treatment to organizations working to replace the economic structure upon which that government rests?

Federal tax law explains how this happens. A 501(c)(3) can educate about public policy and conduct some lobbying, provided lobbying does not become a substantial part of its activity. It cannot participate in political campaigns for or against candidates. A 501(c)(4), however, enjoys far greater latitude. The IRS says such organizations may lobby as their primary activity and may participate in some political activity provided it is not their primary activity. This creates considerable operating room for ideological organizations. DSA openly describes itself as a political and activist organization working to make democratic socialism a reality in America, while its separate DSA Fund conducts tax-deductible socialist political education. Legally separated perhaps, but philosophically traveling toward the same destination.

The principle of First Amendment protection of even radical political advocacy unless directs or likely produces imminent lawlessness came from the Supreme Court’s Brandenburg v. Ohio decision. Consequently, advocating revolutionary economic or governmental change can remain protected speech. Yet the Supreme Court has also held that tax exemption carries conditions. In Bob Jones University v. United States, the Court said entitlement to charitable exemption depends upon serving a public purpose and remaining consistent with established public policy. The IRS likewise states that tax-exempt organizations may not operate for illegal purposes or activities violating fundamental public policy. Congress can, therefore, examine where legitimate education ends and taxpayer-supported political transformation begins. But does it?

That examination is overdue. Congress should establish clear standards determining whether organizations dedicated primarily to restructuring America’s constitutional, economic or governmental institutions qualify for taxpayer-supported privileges. Freedom of speech allows Americans to argue for socialism. Freedom of association allows them to organize around it. Neither principle automatically requires taxpayers to subsidize the effort through deductible contributions and tax exemptions. America can defend liberty while exercising common sense about what government rewards. Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.” A free nation should protect debate while carefully guarding the institutions that preserve its freedom. Anything less is, say it with me, Stupidocrisy.

The psalmist’s words in Psalm 106:15 remind us that prayer isn’t something to be taken lightly. Referring to God’s response to the complaints and cravings of the Israelites, who were freed from slavery in Egypt but then proved unfaithful in their trek to the Promised Land, the psalmist writes, “So he gave them what they asked for, but he sent a plague along with it” (Psalm 106:15 NLT).

Having a direct line of communication with the Creator of the universe is not a privilege to be taken for granted. God’s Word has much to say about prayer, and it all begins with the right attitude.

I sometimes hear people say, “I’ve been wrestling with God in prayer.” My first thought always is “I hope you lost.” If you’re trying to bend God your way with your prayers, you might as well save your breath. That’s not how prayer works. Prayer gives us the opportunity to bend God’s way.

That’s a lesson that’s probably been driven home to you time and time again if you keep a prayer journal. If you look back on some of your prayer requests, perhaps when you were a new Christian, you probably see some efforts to get God to come around to your way of thinking. To get Him to substitute your will for His will. And chances are, you cringe when you see them and rejoice that God had a better plan.

I’m certainly glad that God didn’t say yes to every prayer I ever prayed. When I look back on some things I’ve prayed for, I realize that if the Lord would have allowed them, they could have destroyed me. They were not the right things or the right situations. So, God graciously and lovingly said no.

Maturing as a believer includes learning how to pray—and especially, what to pray for. In John 15:7, Jesus gives an incredible promise regarding answered prayer. He says, “But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!” (NLT). From the original language, this verse could be understood as, “If you maintain a living communion with Me, and My Word is at home with you, I command you to ask at once for yourself whatever your heart desires, and it will be yours.”

When I read a promise like that, I gravitate immediately toward the part that says I can ask whatever my heart desires and it will be mine. But before that, Jesus said, “If you maintain a living communion with Me, and My word is at home with you. . . .” If this is happening in your life, then you’re going to want what God wants. If you’re maintaining a living communion with God and His words are at home in your heart, then your outlook, desires—and in time, your prayers—will change.

And when you unleash the full power of prayer in your life, it will never be the same.
