The deadline came—and went. Remember that Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed back in June between the United States and Iran? There was a 60-day window for that MOU to forge a lasting deal between the U.S. and the Iranian regime. Obviously, that did not work, not because of the best efforts of the United States or the Trump administration, but because we are dealing with an apocalyptic jihadist death cult.

I’ve said it many times over the years—not only since the war launched in February—the Iranian regime is demonic. Its wicked operation slaughters its own people, develops nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, sponsors terror throughout the region, is devoted to the destruction of Israel, America, and all the rest.

Iran could end this war tomorrow if they truly wanted to do so. The Trump administration is more than willing to sit down and negotiate, and they have let the Iranians know that they are willing to make enormous concessions. But the lunatics that are running Iran are not interested. They truly believe that they are winning the war, and they are demanding that the U.S. must comply with every single one of the outrageous demands that they are making. If the Trump administration will not do this, the Iranians have warned that they will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed for Trump’s entire term, and that would put extreme pressure on the global economy. And now it appears that Iran is not content to just hold the global economy hostage. It is being reported that Iran has issued an absolutely shocking ultimatum to the United States. If the Trump administration does not agree to all of Iran’s demands in a matter of weeks, Iran will go on the offensive against the United States and Israel.

This is not just some random Internet rumor.

A political earthquake continues to rumble through the Democratic Party as socialist candidates defeat longtime establishment Democrats in primary contests across the nation. These victories reveal a growing divide between the party leadership of previous decades and an energized socialist movement demanding a dramatic transformation/overthrow of American government, economics, and culture. In Wisconsin, socialist candidate Francesca Hong has gained attention for past comments criticizing Thanksgiving and other traditional holidays. Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado and New York voted for socialist candidates are no longer operating on the political fringe. They are moving into positions of influence.

The debate surrounding these candidates goes beyond personalities and elections. It reflects two competing visions of America’s future. Socialists argue that greater government involvement can create fairness, opportunity, and security. They present expanded government programs and collective economic control as tools to deliver freedom and prosperity. The facts are that socialism takes away power from individuals, families, businesses, and local communities and places all authority in government. America’s founders created a system based on individual liberty, private property, limited government, and the belief that rights come from God rather than government. That philosophical divide remains at the heart of today’s political conflict.

The cultural positions of some socialist candidates have also drawn attention because they want to abolish long-standing American traditions and institutions. Wisconsin socialist candidate Francesca Hong’s past comments against Thanksgiving, Christmas, Independence Day, and other traditions. While every generation wrestles with how to understand the nation’s past, a society that loses respect for its heritage loses the common bonds that hold people together. Holidays, monuments, and traditions serve as reminders of sacrifice, perseverance, and the values that shaped the country. The socialists want to do away with all that. And they lie saying that socialism has delivered life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, when in reality it delivered death, tyranny and poverty to every society in which it was implemented. Who can fall for this?

The rise of socialist candidates presents Americans with a fundamental question: What kind of nation will we become? Elections are ultimately choices about values, priorities, and the role of government in people’s lives. Scripture reminds us that political power alone cannot create a righteous society. True freedom requires wisdom, responsibility, and a moral foundation. As Proverbs 14:34 states, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”The direction of a nation is shaped by the character of its leaders and the choices of its citizens. America’s future will depend on whether freedom, faith, and personal responsibility remain central to the national conversation or if it embraces government as god. We are indeed at a crossroads.

Often, people’s reputations precede them. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Sports heroes and other celebrities are welcomed and celebrated in most places. Sometimes, however, it’s not such a good thing. If you’ve ever been in a social setting in which everyone suddenly got quiet when a certain person walked in, you know what I’m talking about. Some people are doomed to be remembered for the lowest point in their lives or for the worst decision they ever made or for the time they didn’t come through for someone else.

That can be a tough pill to swallow. What makes it even tougher is when the person doing the remembering is the person whose reputation was ruined. The reality is that many people find it hard to forgive themselves.

But that attitude runs counter to the message of Scripture, where forgiveness is found in abundance. The story of the paralyzed man whose friends brought him to Jesus for healing is well-known as an illustration of friendship, determination, and faith. When the friends couldn’t get to Jesus because of the crowd, they cut a hole in the roof and lowered the paralyzed man to Him.

Jesus did indeed heal the man’s physical paralysis. But first He did something more amazing and more profoundly important. “Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, ‘Young man, your sins are forgiven’” (Luke 5:20 NLT).

The word forgiven, in this context, has the basic meaning of sending or driving something away. “Your sins are driven away from you” is what Jesus essentially said. Genuine confession involves more than simply saying, “Oops, my bad”; it also involves repentance, a turning away from the sin. Likewise, genuine forgiveness involves more than simply saying, “No problem”; it also involves a cleansing, a removal of the sin from our lives.

King David wrote, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12 AMPC). You can’t get much farther apart than that. As we saw in an earlier devotion, David had very personal reasons to celebrate God’s complete removal of sin.

In Hebrews 8:12, God says, “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins” (NLT). If God wipes our sins from His memory, who are we to hold on to guilt and shame over our wrongdoing? There’s no reason for us to have a longer memory than God when it comes to our failings.

If you’re guilty of sin, confess it and repent of it. Turn away from your wrongdoing and ask God to forgive you. Then embrace His gracious forgiveness. Release any grudge you may be holding against yourself. Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you—covered by the righteousness of Christ, spotless before Him.
