“Why has whey protein become so expensive?”
Over the last few months, we’ve been seeing this question everywhere.
In our DMs, in comments.
Even from friends who don’t care about protein until they have to buy it.
And honestly...It’s a fair question.
Because if you compare today’s prices to what they were a year or two ago, there’s a noticeable difference.
So where is all that extra money going? Spoiler alert.
It’s not secretly landing in our bank account.
Most people think whey protein is made by protein brands. It isn’t.
Whey is actually a by-product of making cheese. Which means before someone can make whey...
Someone has to make a lot of cheese. And because it’s traded globally, the price of whey doesn’t depend on one company or one country.
It depends on worldwide supply and demand.
If global demand goes up... Prices go up.
If production slows down... Prices go up.
If exports get affected... Prices usually go up again.
Lovely scenes.
This is where it gets interesting.
India produces a lot of milk. But producing milk and producing high-quality whey protein are two completely different things.
The infrastructure needed to process whey at an international standard is still fairly limited. Which means a lot of brands, including us, depend on imported whey protein.
At Proskii, our protein comes from Germany.
Not because it sounds fancy. Because that’s where we found the quality we were happy to serve to our customers.
We’ve heard this suggestion before.
“Why not just switch suppliers?”
“Why not use a cheaper source?”
The answer is...
Because then it wouldn’t be the same product. The easiest way to protect margins is usually to reduce quality, use a cheaper ingredient, or lower the protein.
But once you start making those compromises...
Where do you stop?
That’s never been the kind of brand we want to build.
Most people only see the final price on a website.
They don’t see ingredient costs changing every few months.
They don’t see packaging becoming more expensive.
They don’t see freight costs.
Or currency fluctuations. Or import costs.
Building a food brand sometimes feels like solving a puzzle where someone keeps changing the pieces halfway through.
We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done.
Source the best ingredients we can.
Be transparent about why we make the decisions we do.
And never quietly reduce quality just because it’s the easier option.
If prices ever have to change, we’ll tell you why. If they don’t, even better.
But either way...
You’ll always know what’s happening behind the scenes.
That’s kind of the whole point of building in public.
A few months ago, Proskii was just a handful of people trying to build a better breakfast.
Today... We’re a team of 11.
Eleven people working across product, operations, marketing, customer support and everything in between.
Still a very small team.
Still figuring things out every single day.
But definitely a little bigger than where we started.
Thank you for being a part of this journey.
Every order, every message and every recommendation has helped us grow—not just as a business, but as a team.
Hopefully, next time we share an update like this...
There’ll be even more of us building Proskii for you. ❤️
