Any movement practice is technically “somatic” - likewise with breath. Embodiment of ourselves, and the various layers of ourselves, in these practices is usually what people mean when they use the label of somatic based practices. This comes with an intention placed on experiencing specific emotions/felt awarenesses/focuses or ways of moving that invite us into those different layers.
There are ways to move that promote strength, stability, connection, settling and expansion/contraction. None of them are incorrect or bad - but context and intention matters.
If you have worked with me in groups or 1:1, you’ve likely heard me use terms like “nervous system friendly” ways to move. In this practice, I offer a short (ish) meditation utilizing two of my go to movements that help to introduce this idea.
This “simple” movement combination is a practice I offer often - sometimes as standalone intros to moving with a nervous system/fluid body/somatic infused perspective as well as settling in or easing out of longer practices.
