The Cryptophany Series

This is a new series of works in digital hand-tinted photographic collage.

What’s a cryptophany?

The prefix crypto- means hidden, as in cryptography, the study of codes and ciphers.

The suffix -phany means revealed, as in epiphany, a sudden realization.

Both come from the Greek.

I coined the term to describe an image whose meaning is hidden at first glance, but can be deciphered—or created—by the viewer.

In this series, those meanings are created by you. The image takes its meaning from whatever associations, connections, signs, or symbologies it conjures up in your mind, and is therefore personal to you.

The images in the series are numbered rather than titled so as not to influence anyone’s personal interpretation of the collage.
