LEGO announced something called the “Smart Brick” last Sunday, and it’s a genuine feat of engineering. They’ve essentially managed to cram a whole computer into the footprint of a standard 4x2 brick. It has sensors that can detect movement, a speaker for sound effects, and Bluetooth to talk to other devices. Technically speaking, it’s a marvel: a tiny, stud-covered miracle of miniaturization.
But as I watched the demo, I had that familiar, sinking feeling in my gut.
It’s the kind of feeling that usually arrives before I can logically explain why I’m annoyed. It is a sense that something fundamental is being lost. I’ve been thinking about this a lot because it hits on the Discipline of Underdesign, which has been a major theme of the book I’ve been working on. Seeing the LEGO announcement felt like a perfect, if slightly frustrating, case study.
The core of underdesign is the idea that the most successful systems are the ones that know when to stop designing. They leave intentional gaps for the human to move into.
A standard, red 4x2 LEGO brick is perfectly, gloriously “dumb.” It doesn’t know what it is. It has no opinion on whether it’s the wing of a starfighter, a piece of a garden wall, or a sandwich in a plastic kitchen.
Because the brick is “dumb,” your imagination is forced to provide the CPU. You are the one who provides the spark. The brick is just a tool; you are the architect.
The Smart Brick changes that relationship. When a piece of plastic comes pre-loaded with a siren sound or a movement sensor, it starts to have an agenda. It’s no longer a tool; it’s a script. It’s essentially telling the builder, “I am the part of the build that does X.” By “smartening” the plastic, we’ve actually made the play-space smaller. We’ve added technology, but we’ve subtracted the builder’s agency.
In the world of LEGO, there are two ways to play: The Kit and The Bucket.
The Kit is about following the manual step-by-step to build the perfect replica on the box. It’s satisfying, but it’s a closed loop. If you have a piece left over at the end, you feel like you’ve failed.
Then there is the Bucket.
The Bucket is that battered plastic tub filled with the debris of a dozen old sets. When you dump it out on the carpet, that specific, high-pitched clatter of plastic on floorboards, you aren’t looking for Step 43. You’re looking for a possibility.
The Smart Brick feels like the ultimate evolution of the “Kit” mentality. The instructions aren’t just in a booklet anymore; they are baked into the hardware itself. It’s a system trying so hard to be “helpful” that it stops being a partner and starts being a guide.
I’m clearly not the only one feeling this. Since the announcement, there’s been significant pushback from both the fan community and child development experts. Organizations like Fairplay have warned that the technology could “undermine what was once great about LEGO,” while early hands-on reviews from outlets like Tom’s Guide have echoed the “who asked for this?” sentiment among longtime collectors. It was loud enough that LEGO actually felt the need to issue a public defense of the design, explaining why they felt these specific interactions were necessary and insisting that the technology is “here to stay.”
I don’t think people are being grumpy or “anti-tech.” I think they are instinctively protecting the “openness” of the system. We value LEGO because it’s one of the few places left where the “smart” part of the equation is the person sitting on the floor, not the object in their hand.
The hardest part of design isn’t adding features; it’s having the discipline to stay out of the way. It’s about understanding that the magic doesn’t come from the brick: it comes from what happens in the space between the brick and the person holding it.
