Back To Introduction

Stop hustling. Stop discounting. Stop pretending effort is the same thing as value.

Clients don’t pay for hours, hustle, or even “great work.” They pay for perception, confidence, and the belief that you see what they cannot.

If you let scarcity thinking run the show, you’ll stay stuck as a vendor. You’ll take on bad-fit clients, you will discount your fees, and spend all your time explaining yourself, convincing and pushing to close clients who will never see you as a true expert.

But if you claim the role of advisor, everything changes.

  • You won’t have to chase clients - they will chase you.

  • You say no more than you say yes.

  • You stop billing for time and start charging for outcomes.

  • You raise your fees to align with the value you provide - without apology.

  • You become indispensable not because you work harder, but because you bring more value than competing interests.

Better clients are not a reward for working harder. They are a reward for positioning yourself differently. Higher fees are not granted by the market. They are taken - through posture, authority, and confidence.

It’s important to note what I mean by the subjective terms “Better Clients” and “Higher Fees”.

“Better Clients” doesn’t mean “bigger and stupid with money.” I mean, whatever your Ideal Client Profile (Or our Enhanced Ideal Client Profile™) is that the client is a great match. If the client fits your Ideal profile- that’s a better client. For most, this “better” client will:

  1. Have a problem you know you can solve

  2. Be reasonable and professional to work with

  3. Has the budget to pay your your fee that includes your market rate salary (or more) and a healthy profit margin.

  4. Be sophisticated enough to succeed

“Higher Fees” means a fee that doesn’t just provide you with a job but builds a company. Even if that company is just you and some contractors. That means your fee is not based on trading time for money, but upon the value you bring to the table.

It doesn’t necessarily mean “premium priced”. (Although to get a premium price this book outlines the path.) It means that you don’t have to discount, do speculative work or give away your work. It means you can take a vacation.

The right fee for you is the level of fee that gives you freedom - that changes the dynamic from “creating a job for yourself” to “building a business”.

For me I always saw it like this. If I go to bed at the end of the day and I was truly comfortable with my fee, that was the right fee level.

Over the last two decades, my average fee has increased 11X. That is directly because I follow the tenets put forth in this book. It was a gradual process. As I learned how to get the prospect to put a dollar value on solving their problem, and tell me their budget - I found that my “regular” fee was far short of what they were willing to pay.

The value and budget for solving the problem was almost always far more than what I was charging. I started doubling then tripling my fee. The right clients had no problem paying it in advance.

Secondarily I started attracting and being referred to larger, great fit clients who had the resources to go-to-market and the commitment level to match.

This book is a primer on that shift. From vendor to advisor. From scarcity to abundance. From hustling harder to being paid what you are worth.

The world does not need another vendor. It needs trusted advisors.

The only question is whether you are willing to stop playing the wrong game.

One thing I want to clarify before we get too far. This is NOT about squeezing clients for every dime they have or putting on an act. Higher fees is a means to an end - not the end itself.

Being able to bill for the value you bring gives you freedom. The freedom to pick and choose only the best fit clients, the freedom to have work/life balance and the freedom to someday retire. You’ll be healthier, feel better about yourself and your work and be able to deliver even more value to the clients who make the cut to work with you.
