Exciting news to share!

IT’S BEEN a long minute since I’ve posted, but that doesn’t mean that nothing has been going on concerning Outsiderness. Quite the opposite actually. There have been a few public screenings this year. In February, the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) hosted Outsiderness at The Royal Theatre in Trail, BC. I did a Q&A afterwards and I found something a bit surprising but really lovely. No one asked me any actual questions. Instead, they got on the mic and shared how they resonate with the film and a piece of their own story. My main intentions of the film were to decrease feelings of isolation and to spark conversations around the topics of identity and belonging. To see this happening in real time was very validating.

In early May, my film screened at the FascinAsian Film Festival in Calgary, AB, presented by Filipinos Rising. Unfortunately I was unable to attend in person, but I was able to partake in the post-screening panel discussion virtually. It was moderated by CBC’s Chris dela Torre who, earlier that week, interviewed me for the Radio One show he hosts, The Homestretch (you can listen to the interview right here). I am in discussion with the fine folks at Filipino Rising to continue screening Outsiderness in other communities in Alberta in the future.

The most recent screening took place in Cranbrook, BC which was again hosted by CBAL.

I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, waiting until everything was signed, sealed, and delivered. Knowledge Network, BC’s public broadcasting network, has acquired Outsiderness for streaming and broadcast! As of July 1, they have license to show my film on their channel and streaming platform for four years. This is a non-exclusive license, which means they don’t own any of the rights and I still have full control over the distribution.

This was a process that started in late 2025 when I submitted the film to their online portal for consideration. I heard back in February that they were taking it.

I don’t yet know when exactly it will be available on their streaming service or when it will enter their broadcast schedule, but I will post an update once I know. I have worked on a small handful of films that have gone to broadcast but this is my first as a director/filmmaker, so it’s a nice feather in the cap, and I’m very proud of the accomplishment. I hope that many more will get to see it and keep the conversation going.
