Where Everybody Belongs (Welcome to the Circus)

I KNOW. Months of silence and then two days in a row! This will not be the norm (please stay subscribed :). I’m too excited to share another bit of news, a short documentary I made called Where Everybody Belongs — featuring the Nelson circus community — has just gone live on CBC’s YouTube channel.

The sense of belonging is an overlapping theme between this one and Outsiderness. As you’ll hear in this short doc, the circus community has become home for many seeking inclusion and belonging. They’re self-described “misfits” who can let their “freak flag fly” in circus; they value a space where they feel safe in expressing themselves creatively however they see fit.

I had an absolute blast filming and working with them, the folks at Discover Circus were very generous with their time, access, and sharing. Plus, of course, getting to watch them do their thing is always amazing. Carla Sinclair and Colin Burwell from Empty Cup Media were huge helps on this, assisting me in making the shots look vivid and gorgeous. Local music composer, Ben Euerby, guided me with music selection. Watch the film below…I hope you enjoy it!
