Layal

Layla and its variants — Leila, Lila, Lyla, Leyla, Lailia, Laela, and so on — have become international gems, able to cross cultures and languages to appeal broadly. Popularized first by an Old Arab tale, then by a 12^th-century poem, and finally by a 70s rock song, it makes the charts in the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Canada and France, while also being popular in Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt and beyond.

Enough about Layla though, and onto its lesser known relative, Layal.

Derived from the same Arabic source (layl), Layal is the plural form of the name, giving it the meaning “nights” — and lending it a sense of power, possibility, and multitudes. Pronounced as lie-YAL, lay-YAL and sometimes lu-YAL, it is particularly familiar in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

Notably borne by the singer Layal Abboud, Layal also has the cool bonus of being a palindrome name!
