I started crocheting in first grade, as a fast follow to my kindergarten knitting phase, and I quickly started favouring the single-hook craft more. A few years ago I also learned the fact that there is no machine automating for crocheting like there is for knitting, which does sound like a fun robotics project some day...
Although I have dozens of patterns saved to my phone, I love crocheting gifts for other people the most. It gives me an excuse to think of a project that fits them, whether it be an inside joke/reference, or more commonly, something I know they care a lot about. The finite timeline of these gifts also inherently forces me to finish projects rather than having a ton of half-baked ones.
I rarely make the same thing twice, and this variety often forces me to work with new materials and to think of ways to achieve the results I want. It’s an extra dimension to repeating the same stitches over and over again, and I enjoy that challenge. It’s also admittedly a lot of fun browsing through Michaels trying to see if I can repurpose objects.
My bread and butter accessory to add to crochet projects is plastic safety eyes - they’re super simple to use and add character to any project. I’ve also started carrying around embroidery thread to be used for accents, and modelling wire for shaping.
Some favourite projects include a croissant (that was the first time I used wire to maintain shape), an origami paper crane (that I made while locked away from a COVID exposure), and a lil’ ghost (that turned out adorably).
I’ve slowly added a few more project to my Flickr over the years too.
My next project is quite different than all of the previous - I’d like to start crocheting clothing! I’ve longed for a pair of bolero sleeves for months, and the world is kind of magical in the sense that in many cases, if you want something, you can just make it.
I’ve been sitting on this gorgeous yarn for years now (oops) and I’m excited to finally do something with it!
