Columbus movie listings: June 25—July 2

“Highlights” might not exactly fit what I have to share this week.

First off, oof, most early reactions to Supergirl are not encouraging. I have faith in the vision of DC Universe head James Gunn but less so in Craig Gillespie, who helmed this follow-up to Gunn’s terrific Superman reboot. He’s a solid actors’ director and the praise star Milly Alcock is receiving for her work attests to that, but he’s never handled a tentpole like this. It also seems a little off that the screenplay would be trusted to a writer with only one short credit to her name. Still, I’m intrigued by the comparisons being made by some critics to the work of George Miller and Ridley Scott. And the coming week’s forecast of rain followed by high heat is perfect for summer movie watching, so personally, I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt.

I’m less enthused by Jackass: Best and Last. Fans who’ve already seen the film, a compendium of stunts and interviews, report that the “Best” part of the title refers to its heavy use of previously seen greatest hits. According to an interesting story in The Guardian, this might have something to do with the recent, controversial purchase of Paramount and a mandate by its new owner to release a certain number of films this year.

• Other new titles of interest include Couture, the return of Angelina Jolie as a filmmaker at Paris Fashion Week facing a personal crisis, screening at select multiplexes; and Camp, a teen coming-of-age film with a witchy element a la The Craft, playing at Gateway.

• It’s dropping almost everyplace else, but The Furious has found a new home for the week at the Drexel. The fight choreography has been getting flat-out raves.

• This Thursday, June 25, the Wexner Center for the Arts will host a preview happy hour for its upcoming film series, A Summer Abroad: International Film Classics. There’ll be cocktails and series passes for sale among the cinephile mingling. The Wex’s film curators will also be on hand to discuss the selections and divulge a few things coming in the fall. (I know a couple—they’re very exciting but I’ve been sworn to secrecy.)

• Saturday and Sunday, the truly delightful, multi-Oscar winning An American in Paris screens at the Ohio as part of the CAPA Summer Movie Series.

• Continuing with Twin Peaks: The Complete Mystery, Studio 35 has two screenings of the first five episodes of season two this weekend. Sunday’s matinee presentation features an in-person Q&A with Harry Goaz, aka Deputy Andy.

• Also Sunday, Film Columbus has a 35th anniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s Hook at the Columbus Museum of Art with behind-the-scenes stories courtesy of visiting screenwriter James V. Hart.

• And Wednesday, you can see Captain America: The Winter Soldier, arguably the best film in the MCU, for free at Grove City’s Town Center Park.
