In the classic tradition of true all-ages animation, Minions & Monsters reportedly has a first half that will fly over the heads of the movie’s main target audience. The latest romp with the yellow critters follows a group of minions who wind up working in early 20th century Hollywood, dropping references to the great silent comedians, Casablanca, the sci-fi craze of the 1950s, Citizen Kane and more before it moves into a more conventional heroes vs. monsters scenario. The voice cast includes Jeff Bridges, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, and South Park co-creator Trey Parker.
Speaking of Citizen Kane, the movie that set the bar for late Studio-era visual storytelling plays at select theaters July 5 & 8 for its 85th anniversary.
This weekend, Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition replaces the original theatrical release. The new version features an additional 15 minutes of footage from the film’s universe, inserted post-credits.
Also new for the holiday weekend are two very different perspectives on patriotism. First is Young Washington. The latest wide release from conservative-leaning Angel Studios delivers a (partially AI-generated) portrait of the first president as an ambitious pre-revolutionary snack. Then there’s American Agitators at Gateway. The documentary centers the history and impact of Fred Ross, Sr. and his namesake’s efforts to continue his father’s legacy. As a young man, the elder Ross’ experience running migrant camps led him to a career in community organizing, including work that paved the way for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling.
If you like something more ridiculous for your Independence Day movie watching, there’s also a free show of National Treasure July 3 at Zoombezi Bay.
If it’s July 4th weekend, you can count on Jaws popping up. Head to Studio 35, Gateway or Lennox for the movie’s 50th anniversary.
And if you missed the thoroughly enjoyable crime caper Tuner with Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman a few weeks back, AMC Dublin & Easton have brought it back for the week.
