Sorry, folks - I’m running late because I’m still on the road! It was a quick field trip—two days total—but a lot was packed into last weekend’s pilgrimage to the Provincetown Film Fest. Here’s a whirlwind rundown.
Five films. There wasn’t a dud among them, but I recommend prioritizing three. Stop! That! Train! is the perfect kind of stupid and it won’t be in theaters long. Letty Lynton is a Joan Crawford film that was hidden for 90 years due to rights issues, but it’s been cleared up and cleaned up, and fans of pre-code cinema and vintage fashion should run, not walk. And I Want Your Sex, the Gregg Araki film opening next month, is both the edgy sex comedy you expect from him and a sharp probe at gender roles and generation gaps.
Two talks. The first was a thoughtful conversation between Camp Miasma director Jane Schoenbrun and costar Hannah Einbinder about genre, comedy, and representation, moderated by legendary indie producer Christine Vachon (American Psycho). The second covered the mind-bogglingly prolific career of fest honoree Ryan Murphy through a conversation between him and his friend and occasional collaborator, filth elder John Waters.
Celebrities! In addition to watching folks like Schoenbrun and Einbender onstage, we had a star-flecked viewing of the Araki film when Waters and his companion sat down right in front of us. I’ve had a chance to meet him a couple of times over the years but I still geek out in his presence—he was the artist this Catholic-raised weirdo needed as a teen. My copies of his first two books are falling apart from years of rereading. And I really hope he pulls off the proposed adaptation of his novel Liarmouth with Aubrey Plaza.
Waters recorded a video tribute for a recent Columbus memorial for the late, great Wexner Center curator Bill Horrigan, so I got to tell him it was lovely and promise I’d find him after the Murphy talk to share a couple of items given out to attendees, which I did. Standing outside after that talk, my eagle-eyed husband said, “Is that who I think it is?” And that’s how I briefly got to fangirl all over the amazing and very kind Murray Bartlett from HBO’s The White Lotus and the most celebrated episode of The Last of Us. FYI, he’s fantastic playing a different kind of role in Apple TV+’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.
Will the latest Toy Story uphold the legacy of the most enduring Pixar franchise, or will it be a cash grab that proves they really shoulda stopped after 3? It’s a little hard to say from early reviews—some of the better notices are from critics that aren’t always reliable in my book. But the latest from Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) and relative newcomer McKenna Harris does have a resonant new angle: the impact of screens on the play habits of kids, illustrated by the effect a LeapFrog-like device has on the little girl who inherited Andy’s toys. The new tablet (voiced by Greta Lee) enters the picture with an attitude, convinced that those analog playthings are no longer needed. With another sequel, Disney clearly believes otherwise—that Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang still have value. That said, the House of Mouse has partnered with LeapFrog to license a tablet for preschoolers that looks just like the movie’s villain.
I’m looking forward to catching Leviticus ASAP. A hit on the fest circuit, the debut film from writer-director Adrian Chiarella works two genres at once. It places a gay coming-of-age story within a strict religious community where the forbidden romance between two young men is threatened not just by moral judgement, but by a violent supernatural entity.
Advance word is also promising for Girls Like Girls, a sweeter, more naturalistic approach to teenage same-sex love by director and cowriter Hayley Kiyoko, who cut her teeth in moving images by directing videos for her own songs.
