Olivia Wilde directs and co-stars in The Invite, in which she and Seth Rogen play a tense married couple who invite upstairs neighbors Edward Norton and Penelope Cruz to dinner and discover that the guests are hoping to share more than a nice pinot noir. Early reviews are encouraging. It has to be better than Don’t Worry Darling.
Wet Hot American Summer director and co-writer David Wain goes for another flat-out goofy sex comedy with Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, in which Zoey Deutsch’s Kansas hairdresser embarks on a quest to save her impending marriage by cashing in her pass—with Jon Hamm, who does goofy with the best of them.
There is also, of course, Disney’s live-action Moana. A friend just made a video essay about these.
The Wex takes off with its series A Summer Abroad: International Film Classics. Friday, there’s Jimmy Cliff and one of the best soundtracks every in The Harder They Come, followed Saturday by Bong Joon-ho’s must-see Memories of Murder, and Thursday with the 1949 Italian crime drama Bitter Rice. And there’s more coming.
At Gateway, there’s the music producer doc Peter Asher: Everywhere Man, the Darren Aronofsky-produced nature doc Underland, and the comedy Maddie’s Secret, in which triple threat John Early plays a dishwasher who strains under the pressure of food content stardom.
Three of Kirsten Dunst’s most enjoyable performances are playing out Friday at 934 Gallery. (July 10 update: this has been postponed.)
Also at Gateway, if you like hallucinogens but you’re trying to cut down, you can always just head to Friday’s Fright Club Live! screening of Ken Russell’s Lair of the White Worm.
Soccer fans, you probably can’t find a more interesting place to watch World Cup this weekend than on the rooftop deck of Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti, amid Tavares Strachan’s installation Bar Room.
James Marshall—Laura Palmer’s favorite sad boy—is this weekend’s guest at Studio 35’s ongoing series Twin Peaks: The Complete Mystery.
