Documentarian Penny Lane was in HBO Max’s top 10 streaming films this week with her enlightening 2019 film Hail Satan?. Her new film Wild Inside tells the story of Flaco the owl, who escaped from the Central Park Zoo and became a resident of Manhattan’s skyline for the last year of his life. It’s starting to play at theaters around the country, including two in Ohio, but currently there’s no Columbus date. The filmmaker asks any locals interested in seeing her latest on a big screen to request a screening in Columbus. You can do that here.
This year’s summer movie season hits its apex with the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. You can see his star-studded retelling of Homer’s epic anyplace with multiple screens in Columbus. Much is being made of the filmmaker’s intentionally limited use of digital effects (and I do mean much—leading man Matt Damon even did a tie-in video for The Dodo to talk about it). And since it’s the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, the movie’s also getting attention for its scale. So let’s look not just at where you can see it, but how.
A top-line rundown on different formats for watching is available through the film’s site. Nolan went for an image aspect ratio of 1.43: 1, basically a giant almost-square. Unfortunately, there aren’t any theaters in Ohio with the tech to show The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX with its original aspect ratio. Some theaters with IMAX laser systems can show it in 1.43:1, but based on the weirdly cagey response when I called to ask about it, AMC Easton is not one of them.
The local options essentially split the difference. Some chains are showing The Odyssey in standard IMAX, the next best thing, with a more rectangular aspect ratio of 1.90:1. Gateway Film Center is the only place showing it on 70mm film—with all its beautiful graininess and a 2.20:1 aspect ratio, slightly taller than traditional widescreen.
Once you leave IMAX and 70mm territory, things get a bit murky. There are two digital versions with different standard aspect ratios: one in the wide 2.39:1 ratio (basically, Cinemascope) and one in the 1.85:1 ratio. The latter is the closest modern relative to the movie proportions that were standard before widescreen formats emerged; ironically, it’s also the closest in shape to 70mm IMAX. Marcus and Cinemark each have proprietary large screen systems that could run either digital version. Altogether, it’s enough to make projectionists run for the exits. Good thing YouTuber Adam Hlaváč dove into the weeds and created a spreadsheet of who’s showing what format.
As a co-organizer, I gotta give another callout to Screen on the Green: CatVideoFest 2025, happening Friday at sunset on the softball field in Goodale Park. I’m actually testing the film file now, and we plan to add a couple of fun things for a pre-show.
CAPA has two terrific premieres by two exceptional filmmakers in its Summer Movie Series. Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs, a Best Picture Oscar winner and personal top 10-er, screens Friday. Then on Wednesday, there’s Michael Apted’s Coal Miner’s Daughter, featuring Sissy Spacek’s Oscar-winning performance as country legend Loretta Lynn and Columbus native Beverly D’Angelo crushing it as Patsy Cline.
Saturday, the Wexner Center’s “A Summer Abroad” series offers what might be your only chance to see Chime, a 2024 extended short by Japan’s Kiyoshi Kurosawa about a sound that can drive those who here it insane. The film can only be seen here in theaters; it’s paired at the Wex with Kurosawa’s also new-to-the-US revenge thriller Serpent’s Path, from 1997.
Also Saturday, Studio 35 continues its David Fincher series with his exceptional study in frustration Zodiac, and KG himself, Kyle Gass, will be on hand for a late night screening of the ridiculous Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.
The Drexel has the unassailably badass combination of Maggie Cheung, Anita Mui, and Michelle Yeoh in Johnnie To’s The Heroic Trio on Saturday and Anne Hathaway in the fun fairy tale reimagining Ella Enchanted on Sunday.
This weekend’s free From Book to Film selection at Gateway is The Iron Giant. Like Ted Lasso warned, bring tissues for the 74-minute mark.
