Among the many miscalculations and vulnerabilities that starting a war in Iran has exposed is one that should concern all Americans — the potential for mass cyberattacks on our water systems.
A recent wave of actual attacks has renewed concerns about our water safety, as has ongoing gutting of federal cybersecurity. As of this writing there has been no confirmed contamination or documented public-health injury from these recent incidents. And yet boil water advisories and manual overrides of hacked systems have already been happening in multiple states. Investigators and independent experts consider Iran-linked actors the most likely explanation. Our president has blamed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, which would be sort of funny if it were not so tragically political and brazenly ridiculous. Like vaccine policy by federal decree.
