She almost ruled him out over a text he never sent.
My client Maura had a rule, the kind you don’t even know is a rule until you watch yourself follow it to the letter. A guy goes quiet, you write him off.
100 percent. Not negotiable. Not maybe. Not “let me find out why.”
Just gone, filed under can’t trust it. Next.
She’d used that rule for years. It felt like self-protection. It felt smart.
Then she met a guy who checked every box, and three weeks in, he went quiet. Old Maura would have known exactly what to do. Delete the number, tell her friends she dodged a bullet, move on with her dignity intact.
Except this time she didn’t. She waited. And it turned out his brother had just died.
Here’s the part I actually want you to sit with. Maura’s rule wasn’t wrong because ghosting doesn’t happen; it happens constantly, and most of the time the rule is right. It was wrong because it had no room in it for the truth. It only had room for the story that kept her safe. A quiet phone meant one thing, always, no matter what was actually going on in someone else’s life.
When he reached back out and told her about his brother, she gave him grace instead of a verdict. Not because she’s more patient than you. Because she’d done enough of her own work to tell the difference between real information and her own nervous system defending its old wounds.
He’s her partner now. He drives hours to help her garden. They moved in together. Her adult kids are thrilled for her. He took her to a doctor’s appointment last month like it was nothing. And now they are engaged.
This is what I mean when I say you don’t have a dating problem, you have an energy problem.
It’s not that you can’t read signals. It’s that you’ve been reading every signal through a filter built to protect you from getting hurt again, and that filter doesn’t know the difference between danger and a man having a hard week.
I’m teaching the whole framework behind this Thursday, live, 2:30 pm Mountain, no replay unless you make a special request. If you’ve ever disqualified someone you now wish you hadn’t, or you’re tired of your gut being wrong in both directions, come sit in on it.
