Marni Battista · Unscripted: Screw the Should Life

I’m writing this from the couch in my daughter’s condo in Southern California, looking out at the ocean.

I’m not here for a client, not for a retreat. My 30-year-old daughter had a health scare, and I’ve been here with her through this part of the journey.

I’m not going to get into the details; it’s her story more than mine to tell. But I’ll tell you what it’s been teaching me.

Surrender, mostly. Trusting a process I couldn’t run, direct, or fix. I’ve spent seventeen years telling women to stay in their lane. Teaching women how to support without over-functioning, love without controlling the outcome. And now, having stood in the actual doorway of that lesson, with my own kid as the patient, is a very different exercise than teaching it on a call.

What I’ve learned during this 18-month journey: I can support her without needing to approve every decision. I can speak my truth without needing her to agree with it. I can stay authentic through something scary instead of performing a calm I don’t feel.

What I’ve learned this week: Love can heal. Family is a verb. Actions matter more than words. The best can come from the worst. And my greatest joy is being able to be here for my daughter in her time of need.

And I can say, with a full heart: we’re through this chapter, and the outcome was better than either of us imagined. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. My meditation, my affirmations, the way I’ve been envisioning this outcome every single day, and the way my daughter advocated for herself and how we both took action… that’s not the soft part of my life I do on the side. That’s the practice. That’s what manifesting actually looks like when it’s not a hashtag.

Getting to take care of her this closely …. the food, the slowness, just being near her for every single moment of every day…

has been one of the most soul-aligned things I’ve done.

And I’ve made sure to get my own needs met in the middle of it, too. Breaks. Workouts in the guest bedroom. Small, non-negotiable pieces of myself, even here.

Grateful. Full. Exactly where I’m supposed to be.

More soon.
