What a joy to see your questions and to hear what’s front of mind for you. It can feel like you’re on your own little island when you’re writing, but of course that’s not true; none of us creates alone, and none of us succeeds alone.
One of the things I love most about hosting The Slowdown is that it connects me to other writers. I find poems and poets I wasn’t familiar with before, and I’m given the opportunity to shine a light on their work. One of the things I love most about this newsletter is being in conversation with you directly, without being at the mercy of the algorithm on social media, or hoping that we might be in the same city at the same time. (Of course I’m extra delighted when I get to meet folks in person, but I know that’s not always possible!)
The more connected and supported we feel as we write, the easier it is to keep going, even when it’s difficult. And it’s often difficult! Today I’m answering some questions from supporting subscribers about facing difficulty. There are so many good questions this time around—about deciding how and where to publish, finding the “heat” of a poem, contending with disappointment or dissatisfaction in one’s writing life, and more—so let’s dig in.
