As you drive through the eastern end of the Columbia Gorge into the plateaus of Eastern Oregon suddenly the scenery shifts from spectacular wild land formations on either side of the river to a swirling web of industrial infrastructure – massive high voltage towers connecting to a tangle of power lines. Not so long ago this was prized agricultural land. Now it is mainly growing data centers.
Barbara met up with Kaleb Lay with Oregon Rural Action, to get a tour of these data centers and see up close what we have been hearing about for months. We met in Hermiston, the largest city in Umatilla County, where there are a growing number of data centers, then headed back west a few miles to Boardman in neighboring Morrow County, which is probably the most polluted county in Oregon. Boardman is where the largest and most numerous data centers are spreading, along with their companion infrastructure of sub stations and power lines.
Today we will hear the interview Barbara did with Kaleb Lay on June 25, recorded in his truck, parked by the side of the road across from a large agricultural field with an even larger data center as a backdrop.
