Until 1991 Portland dumped its garbage in a wetland in the St. Johns neighborhood. After the dump closed the land was restored to become Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area. So where did the garbage go after that? Now it goes to a Metro transfer station from where it is trucked 137 miles east to the tiny community of Arlington, Oregon.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Mary Peveto, co-executive director of Neighbors for Clean Air, about the need to consider the consequences of where our garbage goes, such as the intense carbon footprint of trucking our garbage long distances so we don't have to think about it anymore.
