The FDA just made it much easier to build cell and gene therapies. They relaxed rigid manufacturing rules, saving companies time and money while bringing cures to patients sooner.
But then, the FDA refused to review Moderna’s new mRNA flu vaccine. The previous FDA leadership approved Moderna’s trial design. The new leadership rejected the application, claiming the test used the wrong comparison. They changed the rules after an expensive, successful trial ended.
Takeaway: Good news for gene therapy investors, bad news for mRNA vaccine makers. FDA rules currently seem to depend heavily on one person’s opinions.
Dog breeds vary wildly in size, shape, and behavior compared to cats. Why? Dogs evolved to be social, making them trainable for different jobs, so we bred more varieties. Cats got one job: kill the fast-breeding rodents trying to eat our grain.
But there are also three genetic reasons it’s easier to breed dogs than cats:
Mutation Rate: Dog DNA has repeating sections that mutate easily. Cat DNA is strictly ordered and rarely changes.
Gene Structure: In dogs, one mutated gene can change their whole body. In cats, body shape changes require multiple genes mutating at once.
Health Limits: When cat DNA mutates, it often causes severe health problems. Dogs easily survive extreme physical mutations and keep reproducing.
