I was trying to be the prettiest boy looking up to the moon
with a mouth crowded with names that don’t belong to me
I was walking with the sun on my shoulders past open houses
clouded by people who dream in dandelion fluff
I wanted to be confused a little longer
not know the difference between us a little longer
for a while on a sidewalk with hopscotch chalk
I won’t have to rhyme with anything
my mama and your mama and all the birthday cake you can wish on
walk into a bar so why the long face
well what’s prettier than sun in the butter
prettier than dandelion pollen on the Fourth of July
I’ll never belong here but I’m used to it by now
prettiest of the moon’s ghosts haunting your day
