I was trying to be the prettiest boy looking up to the moon with a mouth crowded with names that don’t belong to me I was walking with the sun on my shoulders past open houses clouded by people who dream in dandelion fluff I wanted to be confused a little longer not know the difference between us a little longer for a while on a sidewalk with hopscotch chalk I won’t have to rhyme with anything my mama and your mama and all the birthday cake you can wish on walk into a bar so why the long face well what’s prettier than sun in the butter prettier than dandelion pollen on the Fourth of July I’ll never belong here but I’m used to it by now prettiest of the moon’s ghosts haunting your day
