What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is a traditional treatment often used to ease muscle pain. By creating suction, it stimulates circulation, promotes healing, and helps the body remove toxins naturally.

How Does It Work?

During a session, your TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor disinfects the area of treatment and applies suction cups using flame, electrical, or manual methods. The cups stay on your skin for 3–5 minutes.

The suction creates a vacuum that can break tiny blood vessels under the skin, promoting blood flow. This process may leave marks resembling bruises, called petechiae, which fade within a week or two.

But what do these marks mean? TCM practitioners often interpret their color to assess your body’s condition.

What Do the Colors Mean?

  • Dark purple marks: Indicate a "cold" or tight area.

  • Redder marks: Suggest "heat" and faster circulation (*Redder marks suggest "heat" and faster circulation, but the blood can still appear concentrated, like grape syrup rather than grape juice. This thicker blood, despite flowing faster, leaves visible cupping marks.)

  • Normal skin tone: Reflects a balanced body (Not too tight and the circulation runs well with good blood-body fluid ratio)

What’s the Science Behind It?

Think of cupping marks like hickeys. Hickeys happen when suction breaks blood vessels, leaving a bruise. Similarly, cupping marks result from strong suction, but their color can reveal more about your body.

Here’s the logic:

  • Cold areas: Cold tightens muscles, making them more compact. When suction is applied, more blood vessels may break, creating darker marks. Slower blood flow in these areas also leads to darker colors because less oxygenated (or “older”) blood is being drawn.

  • Hot areas: Heat expands tissues, improving blood circulation. Faster-flowing, oxygen-rich blood leads to brighter red marks.

Summing It Up

  • Dark/purple marks = Tight muscles + slower circulation.

  • Red marks = Relatively relaxed muscles + fast/concentrated circulation.

So, next time you see cupping marks, don’t panic—it’s just your body saying, “Hey, I’m working on it!” And yes, it’s basically just a giant hickey, but with health benefits.
