Exciting Things To Come

So much new is happening, and I’m excited to share it all with you.

As I write this, I reflect on Jesus’s words about putting new wine in new wineskins (Matt 9:17; Mark 2:22; Luke 5:37–39). The new wine expands as it ferments, so it is poured into new wineskins that have the elasticity to expand with the wine. We are doing new things here, as God opens doors, so we thought we should update our site to hold it all.

A little history: about five years ago, I began the Center for Women in Leadership as part of a new academic program launched at Northern Seminary. Today, this initiative has grown to include the Visual Museum of Women in Christianity, guided international trips to Italy, Greece, and Turkey, an annual Symposium dedicated to women of the Bible and Christian history in artwork, and the Alabaster Jar podcast.

Over the last several months, the Lord has encouraged me with this goal:

We want to make biblical scholarship accessible to women in all walks of life and ministry. That means retaining the old treasures, like the Alabaster Jar podcast and the Visual Museum of Women in Christianity, and expanding our resources.

We are starting a supportive, online learning community, taught by women, taught to women, designed for women in the church. Each class is one hour per week, for four consecutive weeks. It will include a live webinar introduction with the teacher, two weeks of facilitated discussion and community building, and a concluding session with the teacher to ask questions and share we’ve learned. I’ll start us off with “Reading the Stories of Biblical Women” in June. We will invite other women scholars to offer classes, and I’m delighted that Dr. Eva Bleeker will be leading a summer class on grief and the church.

We are also starting a monthly book club and at the end of each month, we will hold a webinar with the author about their book. We begin in June, and our first book is Scot McKnight’s The Blue Parakeet. The second book featured is The Traumatized Church, co-authored by Scot and Adrienne Gibson.

To better manage all these exciting new endeavors, and more clearly express what we are doing, we have launched a new website with a new name (I even had new photos taken to celebrate!)
