Editor’s note: This is a translation of one of Giani Ditt Singh’s articles from the Khalsa Akhbar Lahore, set in the milieu of worsening tensions between the Arya Samaj and the Singh Sabha, in which the Arya Samaj has attempted to hijack the Shuddhi Sabha from co-operation with the Sikhs.
The Khalsa Akhbar has long proclaimed that those anmatī people who claim affection for the Khalsa do not do so because the Khalsa faith is good or because its Gurus rendered service to India. In reality, such people place the Sikhs at the front so that the Sikhs may be cast into the fire, while the benefits are taken by the anmatīs.
It has become clear to us that anmatī people treat Sikhs the way a hunter treats a dog. When the dog is released after the prey, the hunter shouts loudly, “Hai-hai, well done Dubbū, well done.” Encouraged by this praise, the dog becomes bold and leaps upon the prey. But when the hunter arrives, he quickly drives the dog away from the kill, shouting, “Away, away, get lost.”
In the same way, other sabhas and samajs deal with Sikhs, as can be seen in the case of the Shuddhi Sabha. When Arya Samajists and other Hindu leaders realised that this work would be very difficult and would provoke opposition if done openly by them, they dragged the Singhs into it and entangled them in the task. During this phase, many supporters of the Shuddhi cause suffered at the hands of the public. But once the work progressed, people grew accustomed to it, and it became clear that the Singhs had achieved success, these same actors now seek to push the Singhs aside and bring the matter under their own control. Thus, the Singhs of the Shuddhi Sabha too will be treated like Dubbū the dog, as the following evidence shows.
A few months ago, the Bharat Sudhar Akhbar set out Shuddhi rules that stood entirely opposed to Khalsa practice: that the person being purified must wear a janeu, bear a name such as Bishambhar Nath or Ram, and that all rites be performed according to Hindu custom with Vedic mantras. In response, the Khalsa Akhbar rightly wrote that this view of the Arya brethren was incorrect.
Shortly afterwards, a committee of several acquaintances was formed to open a Shuddhi Sabha on behalf of Hindu interests, and attempts were made to collect funds for this purpose. To this day, it remains unknown where that committee has gone.
The third proof is clearly given in last week’s Arya Patrika, which states that although the Shuddhi Sabha is presently being conducted quietly, it should purify in such a way that mahaprasad is not given, a havan is performed instead, and a janeu is placed around the neck of the person being purified.
From this writing in the Arya Patrika, it becomes plain that the Shuddhi Sabha seeks to make the Khalsa into its own Arya brethren, replacing amrit with havan and imposing the janeu. They have quietly dropped mention of mundan sanskar, the first injunction of the Vedas.
We therefore hope that our Khalsa brethren will be Singhs of firm resolve, just as the editor of the Arya Patrika is a firm Arya. Their first duty should be to administer the Tenth Guru’s amrit to people of every religion and adorn them as complete Singhs. They must not become anmatī and turn away from their own faith, nor should they carry the burdens of others. Hearing the praise of anmatīs, they must not lose their reason and become fools.

ਅੰਨਮਤੀ (anmatī) - Literally “one outside the Gurū’s mat (discipline).” In Sikh usage the term overlaps with antinomian, non-believer, and heretic, but is more precise than any single English equivalent. Anmatī denotes conduct or affiliation that rejects Gurmatī authority rather than mere doctrinal difference. The term appears both in Gurmatī discourse and in the juridical vocabulary of Śrī Akāl Takht Sāhib, including formal hukamnāmē, to mark positions incompatible with the authority of the Śrī Gurū Khālsā Panth and Śrī Gurū Granth Sāhib.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (amrit) - The Khālsā initiation rite instituted by Gurū Gobind Singh, conferring both spiritual commitment and entry into the Gurū’s temporal order. It is not analogous to baptism, but signifies incorporation into the Gurū’s disciplined community.
(Shuddhī Sabhā) - Originally a Sikh concept of restoration to discipline and re-entry into the Panth, grounded in Gurmatī practice. In the late nineteenth century the term was appropriated and repurposed by the Arya Samaj to denote Hindu reconversion campaigns, a usage rejected by Sikh institutions as incompatible with Sikh doctrine.
ਆਰਯਾ ਸਮਾਜੀ (Ārya Samājī) - A member or adherent of the Arya Samaj movement, associated with Vedic revivalism and assimilationist reform agendas.
ਸਭਾ (sabhā) - An organised council or association, typically religious or political in nature, implying formal collective action rather than an informal gathering.
ਸਮਾਜ (samāj) - A structured social body or movement, denoting organised communal identity rather than society in the abstract.
ਜਨੇਉ (janeū) - The sacred thread central to caste-ritual identity in Hindu practice. Its imposition is explicitly rejected within Sikh discipline as contrary to Gurmatī egalitarianism.
ਹਵਨ (havan) - A Vedic fire ritual. Its substitution for Sikh rites signals ritual assimilation rather than theological convergence.
ਮੁੰਡਨ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ (mundan sanskār) - The Vedic tonsure rite, emblematic of Hindu ritual incorporation and absent from Sikh practice.
(Dubbū) - A proper name used metaphorically for a piebald hunting dog, central to the article’s allegory of manipulation and disposability.
ਬਲਦੀ ਦੇ ਬੁੱਥੇ (baldī dē buthe) - Literally “burning stubble or ashes,” a metaphor for being thrust into danger or destruction so that others may reap the benefit.
ਮਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ (mahāprashād) - In Sikh usage, this refers specifically to jhaṭkā meat prepared in accordance with Khālsā norms and consumed ceremonially. Its consumption functioned as a marker of full adherence to Gurmatī discipline. Arya Samajists, committed to strict vegetarianism, opposed the practice vehemently. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Sikhs often insisted that Khālsā converts partake of mahāprashād to demonstrate unambiguous commitment to the Gurmatī creed. Earlier eighteenth century accounts suggest continuity in this logic, noting that converts, particularly from Islamic backgrounds, were at times required to consume pork to demonstrate loyalty and rupture with prior taboos.
