Erin Kee · The Mental Load Memo

"you're so organized."

people mean that as a compliment and I have never once managed to take it as one, bc what they're looking at is the output, and the part that I’m actually holding inside isn’t super apparent. and I feel like most of us feel that way, right?

in case we haven't met, hi! I'm erin. I’m a working mom of two w/ a full time 9-5 i'm not planning on leaving. I have kids are 21 months and 3.5 and both in full time daycare. i put this on instagram a few months back and it's still the one people send to each other, so it's going in here too!!

a USC study puts moms mental load at about 73% of the cognitive labor at home, and it made me feel so much better reading that tbh!! just bc it means i'm extremely normal and so are you :)

here's what actually moved it for me:

  1. shared notes app lists - so the running list actually sits somewhere we can both see it instead of all in one persons brain.

  2. calendar blocks for me - put in like any other meeting, which is the only reason they survive the week. I add recurring invites for 12 pm workouts 3 days a week, drop off & pickup etc.

  3. simpler dinners - we run the same handful over and over and i stopped acting like I needed a new recipe every night of the week.

  4. leaving texts unread, they will still be there honey!!

  5. lowering the bar - which was the hardestttt one and gave back the most by a mile.

  6. small systems so my brain can reset.

p.s. if you want your own number instead of mine, i built a free version of the mental load performance review and it takes about 4 minutes. it scores what you're carrying and gives you something in writing you can hand to someone instead of trying to explain it in the kitchen at 9pm.

free every week - the paid tier is $9 a month or $90 a year and it's where the full systems live, the dinner build, the split, the scripts.

xo, erin
