i need to do first day of school photos with the cute little sign, and also now remembering i never did end of school photos in May?! so i literally added TAKE PICS to our calendar at 8am on thursday so i don’t forget lol. (if your camera roll also has nothing from the last week of school, hi, hello, same.)
in case you’re new here, hi I’m erin! I’m a working mom of two, i have a full time 9-5 job in corporate sales i’ve been in for over 15 years, and my plan has always been to be a working mom and not quit my job. my kids will be two and four this fall and they both start at a brand new school this week bc our old one closed.
here’s what week one actually requires, and i’m writing it out bc i think most of us just carry this around instead:
we’re going to a new school this year so TBD on how the commute is. thank g they’re providing food, i’m v grateful bc packing lunches and snacks for camps these last few weeks IS NOT IT. and then figuring out who’s doing drop offs and pick ups each day, which we finally solved this year and i’ll show you how below.
i’m already dreading attempting the earlier bedtime and earlier wake ups, and tbh just more tantrums at night those first few weeks bc they literally hold it all in all day at school and then bc we’re their safe place it all comes raging out when they get home in diff ways. IYKYK.
and honestly? half of what got me through last year was just quitting stuff. i stopped trying to make perfect meals every night, i literally plan 2 recipes a week and the rest are freezer and pre made meals, heavily rely on the crockpot (not just for summer!!), and salsa chicken w microwave rice and a bagged salad is an easy way to get it on the table in under 10 mins. and tbh my kids are only eating amy’s mac and chkn sticks these days anyway LMAO.
so yes, run the 5 prompts below, but also just quit some stuff :)
Help me plan the first week of school so I'm not figuring it out on Monday.
Kids: [AGES]. Setting: [new school / same school / new class]
First day: [DATE]
Our schedule that week: [PASTE]
What's already different this year: [new commute, food provided, etc]
What I already know I'm dreading: [BE HONEST]
Give me, in this order:
1. A day-by-day list for week one, one line per day, only what has to happen
2. Anything due BEFORE monday, with the day to do it
3. The photos, forms and first-day things people forget until the night before
4. Where the hardest day is, and what to move off it
Then tell me plainly which single thing I could drop entirely and nobody
would notice.
If I haven't given you enough to answer, ask me instead of guessing.hot tip: that last line is my favorite in any prompt i run. it gives you permission to drop something, which is a thing i will apparently not give myself.
My kid holds it together all day at school and falls apart the second
they get home. Build me a 20 minute after-school landing routine.
Kid: [AGE]. What their meltdown usually looks like: [DESCRIBE]
What time we get home: [TIME]. What has to happen after: [DINNER, ETC]
What I have available: [snack, couch, backyard, 10 minutes, nothing]
Rules:
- No screens as the whole answer
- Assume I am also decompressing from my own workday
- Give me the order, with a time on each step
- Tell me what NOT to ask them in the first ten minutes
Under 8 lines. This has to work when I'm tired too.hot tip: do not skip the “tell me what not to ask them in the first ten minutes” part, bc i was asking how was your day the SECOND we walked in the door and that was the trigger every single time.
Build our school year morning logistics.
Home: [AREA]. School: [AREA]. Drop off window: [TIMES]
Adult 1 works: [LOCATION], there by [TIME]
Adult 2 works: [LOCATION], there by [TIME]
Kids: [AGES]. Same location: [YES/NO]
Give me:
- Who does drop off and who does pickup, and why that split
- The leave-by time, working backwards from the drop off window
- What time the morning actually has to start
- Which day of the week is hardest and what to do about it
If the timing doesn't work, say so instead of making it fit.hot tip: drive it once on a real weekday at the real time first. a tour and an open house don’t count, and i say that as somebody who thought they did.
Build my first-week-of-school dinner list.
Rules:
- Only 2 actual recipes for the whole week, both under 30 min hands-on
- Everything else is freezer, pre-made or crockpot
- At least 2 nights on the table in under 10 minutes
- My kids currently eat: [THE 4 THINGS THEY ACTUALLY EAT]
- Nothing I'd have to shop for on a weeknight
Give me the week, the one grocery run that covers it, and what goes in
the crockpot on which morning.
Don't make it aspirational. Make it survivable.hot tip: be honest in the “what my kids actually eat” line. telling it amy’s mac and chicken sticks got me a week i’d actually cook instead of a week i’d feel bad about.
Build me a milestone photo calendar for this school year.
Kids: [AGES]. First day: [DATE]. Last day: [DATE IF KNOWN]
What matters to us: [first day, last day, programs, lost teeth, whatever]
Give me a dated list of every photo worth having this year, each one as a
calendar reminder set the NIGHT BEFORE, not the morning of.
Include what to have ready, like a sign or an outfit.
Under 12 entries so I'll actually do it.hot tip: night before, not morning of. an 8am reminder on the first day is one you’ll swipe away while finding somebody’s shoe.
below the paywall: the recurring calendar setup that ended the daily “wait are you doing pickup?” texts and the five minute sunday check that catches conflicts before they happen.
