Erin Kee · The Mental Load Memo

both of my kids started a brand new school last week. our old daycare closed, which i was so sad about, and it was just wild that that night was the last night of summer. i don’t even know where the summer went. does anyone else feel me?!

we attempted to run an earlier bedtime that night and it didn’t go super well.

and of course i was just then looking at the email of all the things we need to bring and realizing i don’t have the specific name tags that we probably need. i randomly did a target pick up order for a few little teacher gifts that day. it just seemed like this came up so quick and now all of a sudden we’re in back to school mode, new routine mode, having to buy new things i didn’t even realize i needed.

i also was realizing that i never took the end of school year pics with a cute little sign back in may so i literally had to add a calendar invite for that morning to remind me to take both an end of school year pic with one side of the sign and a beginning of school year pic with the other side.

and i am kind of grieving the later bedtime and slumber parties and pool days. i just don’t even know where the time went!!

anyway. the next morning at like 8am i posted this:

i’ve lived 9 lives this morning lol

because that was just the morning. what i wasn’t ready for was everything that came after it.

i was probably getting like 15 emails every other day from the new school, with different apps i needed to log into, different whatsapp threads i was getting invited to, different email threads. and we got a new pediatrician so i have a new login for that too.

so i sat down and actually counted, and it’s nine. nine different places school stuff comes from. nine.

it felt really overwhelming to have everything in so many different places, so i thought ok how can i make this more efficient.

i didn’t know there was an early release day coming up. i had no plan for it. and i have a customer meeting that afternoon that i cannot move.

nobody sent me a thing about that. it was in there somewhere, in one of the nine, and i would have found out about it the morning of, which is how i find out about most things right?!

so that is the thing i sat down and built, on a tuesday night, mostly because i did not want to have that same feeling again in october.

it’s a little website. that’s it. everything the school sends us lives on one page, and my husband, my mom and our sitter each have their own link to it, so they open it and see their own part and stop texting me for the dismissal code.

it tells me when two things land on the same day. it has the nurse line and the front office as buttons so i’m not digging for a number while somebody’s crying. and when there’s a day school is closed and nobody’s covering it, there are two buttons that text our sitters with the date and the hours already written in.

it took me about five minutes to set up and i have not had to think about school logistics since.

ok tell me though!! how many is yours? go count them and put the number in the comments, i really want to know if nine is a lot or if everybody is sitting somewhere around nine and nobody has ever said it out loud.

upgrading is basically the cheat code for everything i build here. for less than one target run, you get the stuff i don’t put on instagram:

  • the whole command center, yours to keep and fill in with your own school, every single step, done in one sitting and never again,

  • how i got nine places down to one, including the four that email and the five that absolutely will not (this is the part nobody tells you about),

  • the sunday paste that updates the whole thing for me in about four minutes, typed out exactly as i type it,

  • every guide and system from the memo, the entire archive, unlocked the second you upgrade

  • the members chat, bonus prompts, and the stuff i don’t put anywhere else

the full setup is below, every step, every screenshot, the whole build.
