hello! thanks for reading “joel”. in todays issue i round up some delicious new york city restaurants for ya. whenever i visit new york i try to get in some good eating. lucky for me, there’s plenty to be had! maybe the highest per capita good restaurants in the whole world? idk maybe! let’s dig in (pun intended)

the darkest loudest restaurant i’ve ever been at, more like a night club with lasagna. there was a girl birthday happening next to our table and they were basically screaming for an hour, which i kind of support, but ultimately they were too loud. all the food was delicious and quick. we got a same day reservation, which made it easy to get seated quickly.
best things that we got:
two sheet lasagna (genius)
fried green tomatoes w/ tuna tartare (ok what)
salted caramel chocolate mousse (!)
i walked past this butcher shop one morning and saw someone wearing a cerce shirt. cerce was a hardcore band from boston. i saw them play in ny years ago at market hotel a bunch of years ago. anyways it was enough for me to go in and see what the deal was. the breakfast sandwich was very bomb. they make a folded egg with oaxaca and cheddar cheese inside, pickled pepper on a biscuit. understated simple beauty.

we definitely got taxed for being young and cool at the classy fancy bemelmans bar. they made me change into my girlfriend’s jnco pants because i was wearing shorts. and then when we were seated they charged us $25 each for the piano man. i guess woody allen used to play clarinet there all the time… i guess i would pay the fee for that. ok but the real beauty of this bar, the walls are all covered in murals hand painted by the artist who did the children’s book madeline, ludwig bemelman. very cool vibe if you can take the punishment.

a perfect neighborhood sandwich shop in ridgewood, every single one looks yummy. i had the tuna and the chicken and the broccoli over the course of a couple days. i peaked into the kitchen a couple times and they were running it like wartime trenches. i think both days i had to wait 25-45 min for a sandwich, which might be a little crazy but worth it imo. maybe you’ll make a friend in line !
amazing sandwiches:
tuna crisp (perfect sandwich)
chicky smash (too slutty for me)
broccolini (a dream)
honestly, you just gotta follow your heart
we got brunch here on a sunday morning and so we had to wait like an hour, which is a little crazy in my mind but whatever i get it. the waitresses were wearing the same shoes as me and said i looked good, if i lived in the neighborhood i would go there all the time :) oh yeah also they had a big stuffed tiger in the wall, so that’s why i drew that.
stuff that was good:
summer melon salad/chamoy watermelon (delicious)
chilaquiles (my go-to mexican diner breakfast)
coffee tres leches cake (bruh)
sweet little burrito window near fort greene in brooklyn. their tortillas are truly yummy and fresh. simple ingredients inside. reminds me of some of my favorite burritos of my life. there’s a little to be desired if you’re a real burrito eater, but these are close to the source and great in a pinch.

frijoles y queso (magic)
mole (if you need protein)
i loved this beloved east village bodega. they’ve got about 100 different sandwich options all influenced by korean flavors. my girlfriend had this spot on her radar and it blew my mind. we got a chicken cutlet with cantaloupe on it… incredible
keely pick:
p.h.o 10 w/ chicken cutlet. sesami leaves, fresh mozzarella, onions, chives, cucumber, cilantro, avocado, no bacon, cantaloupe, fresh jalepeno, hoysin sauce, spicy red pesta sauce, on a hero (mind-blown emoji)
my friend dillon and i were going to do drugs and sit at washington square park but we needed to grab something to eat before we went, he recommended this place. pretty amazing vibe, cafeteria style and great prices. you could probablt get anything here and it would be great, huge hot food bar, constantly getting refreshed.
if you wanna eat like me:
shrimp pasta (love these noodles)
blueberry syrinki (mini cheesecake let’s go)
my favorite slice of pizza in nyc is their burrata slice, unfortunately every time i passed by on this trip the lines were too long. mama mia.
best things that we got:
buratta pie (goddamn)
for when you need a big glass of sweet milk to round out your eating and walking around the city for the day! it’s like a s’more or a creme brulee, it’s so f—ed up.
