I love yoga. It’s best when:
At the end of a yoga practice, a teacher often says, the student and teacher in me honors the student and teacher in you.
Here’s how it’s showing up for me, see if you can relate:
When I think I know more than someone, I often get a lesson from them. When my ego thinks it has it figured out, when I think I am the teacher, a teacher appears.
My son. Young, 25. AI whiz. My health and fitness hero. Knows trends, tech. Lover of having fun. He is my teacher. When I think I am the one to teach him something, the turnaround happens. I love learning from him so much.
Younger colleagues at work. Bright, intelligent, see new ways. When I think, here’s a way to approach it, I realize I may drive them crazy. They are my teacher, I am the student.
New tech and skills to learn. When I have a gap in my knowledge needed to accomplish something, remembering to learn from an expert, save me time, immerse myself in learning.
Keeping fresh. Focusing my intake on what inspires me. Being a student of different disciplines, focusing my energy on only taking in and learning from those that inspire me.
Journal Questions to Consider:
Where are you really rigid in being a teacher? Where do you think you have it all figured out, you think you are “right”? It may even appear you are a bit crusty you are so locked into having it right. Here’s a tip, if you are sure you are a teacher of some “lesson”, it’s a sure sign you may have something to learn.
Who are your greatest teachers right now? Who are you learning life lessons from? Who are your worthy opponents? How are they teaching you to grow? (Don’t stay stagnant).
Where can you intentionally be a student? Where do you want to learn? Where do you want to focus your energy on learning? Who inspires you right now, how can you learn from them and study them? What do you want to expand learning about?
Then, where can you share your best, and teach, and have an impact, and teach in a way that supports your good and and world’s good? Where do you want to give your energy? Where can you teach from service and generosity, and love of it, not from your ego? It could be as simple as teaching someone they matter by demonstrating kindness.
For me, something magic happens, I become a better teacher when I practice being a student.
With so much care friends. Stay in touch with your student/teacher stories! In gratitude for you.
Jill
