Dear friends.

I’d like to celebrate a mindset I’ll call “I’ll do one better for you”. A mindset we can all learn from.

Let me explain…

I was working on an enterprise project, needing to understand the concerns of stakeholders in order for the solution to have impact. I was listening to this leader. A few minutes in, this leader interrupted me and said:

I was so grateful. He saw me, valued me, and launched me forward in a bigger way.

This mindset has been on my mind lately, what if:

How is it going for you with this kind of generosity practice? Consider these self-awareness questions to get the wheels turning. It all starts with noticing. Grab a journal, a notebook. Dive into this inquiry.

Self-Awareness on the Mindset of One Better Generosity:

  • What is your go to mindset? Do you default to, “let me do one better for you?” Are you a door opener? A possibility supporter? Or do you tend to constrict options?

  • Do you practice generosity, and give what you can that may be of service?

  • Where do you hold back with practicing generosity? Why do you hold back? What story do you tell?

  • Do you believe people need to earn the right for your help, that you need to have high trust before you assist? Why is that? Is that a true? What opportunity might be lost by requiring someone needs to earn your generosity?

  • Where could you eeek out a little generosity to spin the world in the right direction? What would it look like to make one generous move of, “I’ll do one better” once a week? How might that have a impact on others? On you?

  • Where would you like someone to give you a “I’ll do one better for you” act? Can you see the value and impact of generosity?

Now, I’m not saying you need to take time to do “one better” for everyone, no, not at all. But, what if each week, a few conversations a week, to the stranger at the grocery store, the person asking to network with you, for your children, your spouse, your neighbor - you made the statement and took an action of: “I’ll do one better.”

And, let’s be honest, you are going to feel pretty damn good for doing it. That’s the gift of generosity. Just think, if we all showed up with a “I’ll do one better” practice, the momentum of good that could be set in motion.

Thanks for playing along. (Let’s love up all those graduates by doing one better for them where we can.)

With care,

Jill
