The more I think about it, the more I’m positive growing up in the 1980s was the best, and last good time, to grow up.
We had it so good, and didn’t even know it.
Consider …
Today, when a teenager needs to get in touch with a friend, they can: Call them, message them, snapchat them, instagram them, check Life360 or any other location app, or do probably a dozen other things I don’t even know about.
When we wanted to get in touch with someone for something important, like telling Lauren that Steve told Jill that Mark likes Tara but that Tara likes Steve, all we had was a telephone attached to the wall. And there was a near-100 percent chance that when we called, we’d get a busy signal.
Which meant one thing: Emergency breakthrough! Remember that? You dialed the operator, say you needed to make ‘an emergency breakthrough’ to Lauren’s number, and next thing you know, you’re in Lauren’s phone call, the operator says in that nasally voice that every operator legit had, what was up with that, but yeah, the operator says ‘You have an emergency breakthrough from …’ and you quickly say, before the operator disconnects you, ‘StevetoldJillthatMarklikesTarabutTaralikesSteve!CallMeBack!’ and that was that.
What a time.
