Summer is my favorite time of the year and with it comes a lot of gaming showcases! From the big shows to the small ones, I love showcases of all varieties. I’ve always been one to want to make things more ceremonial or celebratory because I just think it’s fun. From making bingo boards for showcases to having snacks and letting myself get excited. I love the hype, and I don’t believe that just because you are hyped you either have to be let down or satiated. A common held belief is to temper expectations, but not me nuh-uh, I take the hype to the moon!

Since E3 was very un-ceremoniously body slammed off a skyscraper, I’ve acclimated quite well to our new landscape of developers and publishers doing their own thing. I for one, really prefer the plethora of personalities that we get to see on display and the length of time that we get soooooo many new announcements.

With around 30 showcases this year, there were so many announcements that made me incredibly excited for the future of games. I know a point of contention is that many people don’t want to miss out on announcements, but it’s okay! I love to watch all of every showcase, but even if you don’t, you can still have a blast during the showcase season.

It’s fun to be prepared! There are many websites that list all of the showcases and update when new ones pop up, you can see which ones you are interested in and set time aside if you’re able. If you aren’t able, even tuning in for a few minutes here or there I think can also be fun. There are always articles that gather all the announcements, but that shouldn’t be the default. I prefer to watch a showcase hours or a day late than not at all! Tuning into showcases you aren’t familiar with is also great for broadening your wishlist, you’ll be surprised at the games you’ll see!

The showcase season is a communal experience that I don’t take for granted. I don’t have social media but I absolutely adore hopping on forums like Famiboards and Resetera to see all the discussions that pop up. Many YouTubers and streamers even host watch parties, so see if anyone you subscribe to does that! This time of year is a great reason to be involved in the discourse because of all the news, and remember that it’s okay to completely ignore the pessimistic talk and focus on all the stuff that makes you happy.

My parting advice, is to make things more of an event for yourself no matter what it is. Have friends over or hop on a discord call, make bingo boards with silly predictions, get your favorite snacks, and make things the most summer-y you can make them. Think about what summer means to you, and lean into that!

What does summer mean to you, and what games do you play? I’d love to read your comments below!
