the frost is upon us and no sensible creature is leaving their lair. so it’s only fitting to welcome the winter blues with a curated list of deliciously morose media to consume while you’re crypt-bound. hot ghoul diaries doesn't gatekeep…unless you’re trying to figure out which mall in the greater pittsburgh area has the shortest auntie anne’s pretzel line. that’s going to the grave.

• the hollow places: the perfect read for when you’re home for the holidays and looking to freak yourself out. it’s about a woman who discovers a portal in her uncle’s house that transports her to new dimensions, crawling with horrifying creatures who can worm their way into your mind. if you like any sort of cosmic or sci-fi horror, you will love this. t. kingfisher never misses.

• the winter people: this was one of the first books that really got me into horror novels. it’s an atmospheric, new england gothic tale that takes ghost stories to new levels of terror. i highly recommend reading this with some snowy cabin ambient music + a warm spiced mocha.

• wuthering heights: okay, this one is kind of obvious, but i couldn’t leave out the o.g winter time gothic novel. it’s the perfect read for curling up near the window while the wind howls. it’s also great for when you’re finally in a healthy relationship but need to dip your toe back into chaotic toxicity from a safe distance. this book will make you sob to the point of disfigurement, so it’s great if you need to fake an allergic reaction or personal tragedy in order to get out of a family event this month.
