Wellness Trends I’ll Never Partake In [Again]

I used to think more was the whole point of wellness. More supplements, more modalities, more discipline. If it cost money, took willpower, or made me uncomfortable, some part of me assumed it had to be working. I don’t believe that anymore, THANK GOD.

Honestly, I think a lot of us who were sooo desperate to heal—I mean, to just feel NORMAL (whatever that means…!)—were willing to throw the whole non-toxic kitchen sink at our symptoms. Even if that meant spending hundreds, if not thousands on supplements. Or waking up early to wash and juice organic celery juice to only then sit on the toilet. Fun.

Here’s what I’ve retired, and why.

No hate on this one, but I can do breathwork on my own. I don’t need to pay for a class to breathe next to a room full of strangers who are mid emotional breakthrough. I’m genuinely happy for them, but that’s not an energy I want to sit in on purpose. Breath is one of the only nervous system tools we carry with us at all times, free, and available the second we need it. Turning it into a paid group event with an audience made it feel performative instead of regulating. The whole point of the practice was to come back to my own body. I don’t need other people’s catharsis in the room to do that.

My body needs the opposite of a cold plunge. It needs warmth, comfort, and safety. Cold exposure can be a genuinely useful tool for some people, and I’m not arguing against it as a practice. But a stress response is a stress response, and mine doesn’t need one more source of it stacked on top of an already full plate. If your nervous system is under-stimulated and craving a jolt, cold plunging might be exactly right. If your system is already running hot, adding a deliberate shock to it isn’t resilience. It’s just more cortisol with better branding.
