Tomorrow the United States turns 250. The Semiquincentennial marks two and a half centuries since a group of founders bet everything on an unproven idea and then built a country around it. I can’t think of a better way to honor that anniversary than this list. The founders below are doing the 2026 version of the same bet: rebuilding the country’s factories, grid, shipyards, mines and defense with their own hands. Independence in 1776 was declared. In 2026, it’s being reinforced!
A year ago I published Vol. 1: 100 of my favorite HardTech startups fixing what’s broken across energy, space, defense and manufacturing.
Since then, the movement has gotten bigger, louder and far more organized. A whole new cohort of founders has shown up since that first list — and they deserve a post of their own.
I wrote in Vol. 1 that “these are not just companies, they are missions.” That’s even more true today. The new wave goes deeper into the unglamorous foundations of the physical world: grid transformers, tungsten mines, tool-and-die shops, shipyards, chemical synthesis, battlefield power. The stuff nobody tweets about until it breaks.
A few examples of what these teams are doing:

Chasing fusion while selling radiation testing along the way (Fuse)
Moving semiconductor fabs into orbit (Besxar)

Building entire new towns for people who build things (California Forever, Proto-Town)
Putting warships on autopilot (Saronic, Blue Water Autonomy, Forterra)
Because the grid is the bottleneck for AI, EVs and everything electric — and most US transformers are older than the engineers replacing them. Because Ukraine proved that drones, autonomy and production capacity decide modern conflicts. Because China controls the majority of tungsten, rare earths and battery materials. And because a generation of founders watched SpaceX and Anduril prove that startups can out-build primes — and decided factories, shipyards and mines were next.
