WALKING MY WAYS. Recently, I was involved in a garage sale. Which made me think back,to many years ago, when the entire neighborhood had a yearly block sale. With 7 or 8 families participating. Where we had a “show and sell,” party on Friday night. With wine and cheese. For only our neighbors. While the actual sale started at 8:00 A.M. the following morning, for everyone else. Including 40 or 50 dealers, waiting in line. And where there always were plenty of things for me to buy. And sell. And a wonderful opportunity to bond.
But this current sale was much smaller. With only two driveways and four participants. But much the same, in other ways. And where the importance of posting an item or two on Craig’s list seemed evident.
Although most people came because of our signs. Which were posted all over. With many buyers just walking in. And others hearing about it, from friends. But some because of Craig’s List. And seeking specifically advertised items. In any event, we had quite a few buyers. And many occasions to kibbitz. Which is always one of the side benefits of garage sales.
And some haggled. But not that many. And then I remembered that I once had friends from San Francisco, with whom I cycled to a rummage sale. Where one of my guests discovered a dress, that she had sewn in her S.F. home, twenty years earlier. A remarkable find. And proving that one really never knows what one will discover. Never. My personal motto is: “Garage sales are for buying something you don’t need. With money that you don’t have.” And there is another saying: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” So I guess that, whether you like it or not, garage sales are here to stay. At least for me. For sure. Finis.
