Robbie Marriage · Gridiron Deep Dive

Today, I relaunch my Sports Passion Project, as the Gridiron Deep Dive.

To all existing readers, this is merely a name change, but to new readers, welcome!

We all have memories saved from years and decades watching NFL football. Players, teams, games, or seasons that stick in our minds. The mission here at the Gridiron Deep Dive is to explain the bits of the NFL that people remember vaguely, but don’t fully understand. Not just what happened, but why it happened, and what it meant.

Perhaps you remember JaMarcus Russell as one of the foremost draft busts in NFL history, but not the codeine addiction, not his father figure’s near death on draft day, and not the all-too-brief stretch where JaMarcus did play well:

Perhaps you remember that Matt Schaub holds the post-merger record for passing yardage in a game, but fail to remember the 43-37 slugfest where he took that crown:

Perhaps you recall Bill Belichick’s infamous January 2000 defection from New York to New England, but are not acquainted with all the juicy drama that led Bill to leave:

I cover the details. The small stories that add up to the big story.

Longform essays, which tell the whole story, not just sticking to the moments.

  • His Year: Deep dives into players with one season peaks.

  • Forgotten Seasons: Teams or players that accomplished much, but have found themselves forgotten by the masses

  • Analytical Breakdowns: Occasional deep dives into the deeper mechanics of the game, which manifest into the moments we remember.

Delivery is on Monday mornings.

At the Gridiron Deep Dive, we spend all our time focusing on the stories behind the big headlines. If this is the type of story that interests you, subscribe to follow along at the link below!

Thank you very much!
