Why Spoken French Sounds So Different

One of the most frustrating things about learning French is the gap between the French you see written and the French you actually hear.

Donc aujourd’hui, on va travailler exactement là-dessus.

I’ll start with a short text about my vacation last week. First, I’ll read the written text aloud. Then I’ll say the same thing with a more natural spoken flow: d’abord slowly so you can catch everything, et ensuite at normal speed.

Note that this isn’t about the difference between formal French vs. slang. Both versions are completely normal French. What changes is the way sounds and words get reduced when we speak naturally.

The idea is for you to understand a bit better why spoken French sounds so different from written French.

The letters highlighted en bleu are silent letters. You won’t hear them when I read the text aloud.

Je suis partie en vacances du sept au quatorze août. Je ne suis pas partie loin de chez moi, ce n’était qu’à une heure de route, mais c’était déjà un autre pays.

J’ai passé la semaine en Espagne, à San Sebastian exactement.

On s’est tout de suite mis à l’heure espagnole: le petit-déjeuner à 10h, le déjeuner à 14h30 et le dîner à 21h30. C’était un rythme parfait pour les vacances…(un peu moins pour la vie quotidienne!).

J’ai passé énormément de temps à lire, marcher, me baigner dans l’océan… et manger des tapas.

Bref, tout ce qu’il fallait pour déconnecter de la routine du quotidien.

Maintenant, let’s see what happens when I use a more natural flow.

I’ve highlighted the changes en jaune below so you can spot them more easily:

• The e sound often disappears : je → j’, de → d’, semaine → s’maine, petit → p’tit…

• The ne in negative sentences is often dropped as well

• Et parfois, we simply shorten words: autre can sound like aut’, and petit-déjeuner becomes p’tit-déj.

J’suis, s’maine, d’jà, aut’, etc. are there to represent pronunciation. These spellings are only here to show you what you’re hearing; you wouldn’t normally write French this way.

I think the real difficulty with spoken French is that your brain is often waiting for sounds that simply aren’t going to arrive.

• You’ve learned je suis, so your brain waits for je + suis. But you hear j’suis.

• You expect déjà, but you hear d’jà.

• You expect petit-déjeuner, but you hear p’tit-déj.

To understand spoken French, you have to be familiar with those shorter versions and learn to expect them in conversations. That’s what this exercise is designed to help you do.
