Chapter 11

My dreams are woven with tapestry threads-conjoining to meet the sky and sea- I dive into the water and awake panting.

There is a sliver of morning light filtering through window drapes. The Stranger-Mathund -is asleep on his side. His face is still somewhat obscured, but his hair-uncovered-is very dark and goes til his jaw. His beard is thick and dark as well- the shade of his skin is not dark but not light. The triangle of white shirt remains-and his large figure- obscured in the darkness- seems to be remaining on the seat somehow despite our jostlings.

I realize now that I had not heard a man in the front when, and I suddenly wonder if the carriage was being driven by Magick alone. I listen carefully-finally picking up a faint humming snore from behind Mathund-who is now watching me.

I start and flush-not realizing he had silently awakened-and wondered if I should greet him.

He leans partly upright, propping up his boot, the nicest and blackest one I’d ever seen. “Good eve, Miss.” He says with the faintest twinkle in his eye.
