Designing a business (model) is thrilling in its own way. You weave a narrative and snap different pieces together until the whole thing coheres into something with a bit of harmony, something that makes lyrical and economic sense. Like writing the perfect turn of phrase, you can almost feel it when you’ve hit the mark—you might get a little shiver down your spine. There is often a micro moment of melody, something pure and exciting ringing in your ears, like the sound of a tuning fork suspended in the air.
For me, those goosebumps are borne of two elements, strange bedfellows, congealing simultaneously: possibility + defensibility. Letting the imagination run wild is super fun—there is so much potential in the world!—and when an idea can also make safe passage through the narrows of real-world constraints, the feeling can be downright magical…
When presenting ideas, the listener often craves that goosebumps moment, too. They can see the potential, but they want that second element of defensibility to collide with possibility so they can get shivers down their spine, too. When they ask for backup on this-or-that assumption, take it as a good sign: they’re half-way to believing and want to put lingering doubts to bed…
