Seven correction officers were injured in two separate Aug. 10 incidents at Auburn Correctional Facility, according to the union representing state correction officers. Three officers were hurt during a recreation-yard confrontation involving an incarcerated individual who allegedly resisted officers, while four others were injured during a separate mess hall incident later that day. All seven officers were treated by facility medical staff and remained on duty, while the incarcerated individuals involved were placed in Special Housing Units pending disciplinary charges.

Cayuga County lawmakers will consider millions of dollars in infrastructure spending, jail staffing measures and changes to health insurance for newly hired non-bargaining employees when the Legislature meets Tuesday night. Major items include a $3.15 million federal grant for the Deauville Island Bridge replacement, another $590,000 in American Rescue Plan funding for Emerson Park and measures addressing jail vacancies that have driven overtime costs and forced the county to house some incarcerated women elsewhere. Lawmakers will also weigh a countywide economic development strategy, several public safety and human services grants and possible litigation to recover more than $15,000 in mechanic’s lien funds that officials say were mistakenly released.
Two Ontario County nurses are pushing for stronger protections for health care workers after a woman previously charged in hospital attacks was arrested again following another incident at F.F. Thompson Hospital. Canandaigua police said Alyna Lindenau was charged with assault and making a terroristic threat after allegedly injuring an employee and threatening to burn the hospital and kill staff, following separate incidents in June and July. Nurses Ehren Strohm and Dixie Kendall are working with state Sen. Pam Helming on the PROTECT Act and developing a toolkit to help health care workers navigate the legal system, workers’ compensation and mental health support after an assault.
A 54-year-old Horseheads man was found safe Sunday morning after an overnight search on Seneca Lake involving marine patrol units from Yates and Schuyler counties and New York State Park Police. Scott Beecher had been reported overdue after the Yates County Sheriff’s Office received a navigation complaint around 9:46 p.m. Saturday in the town of Starkey. Deputies searched multiple locations through the night before locating Beecher around 9 a.m. in good health.
The Victor Town Board voted unanimously to begin considering the acquisition of five Eastview Mall parcels through New York’s eminent domain process, with officials saying the move is intended to protect the mall’s long-term economic viability. A public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 28, and the town says any eventual acquisition would transfer the parcels to Victor 2040 LLC, which has proposed a fully financed transaction with no cost to taxpayers. Town officials said Eastview supports nearly 4,000 jobs and generates sales tax revenue equal to about 20% of Victor’s budget.
Jose Gonzalez-Martinez was sentenced to 1 1/2 to three years in state prison after pleading guilty to stealing more than 20 pairs of Meta glasses worth nearly $10,000 from the Target store in Victor. Prosecutors said the glasses, valued at $9,929.79, were stolen Jan. 24, and Gonzalez-Martinez was arrested Feb. 10. He was sentenced as a second felony offender after pleading guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny.
The Cayuga County Youth Bureau is accepting funding applications for programs serving county residents younger than 21 during the 2026-27 program year. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, faith-based organizations, schools and municipalities, with funding available for programs such as mentoring, recreation, after-school activities and services for at-risk youth. Applications are due electronically by 5 p.m. Sept. 18, and funded services must be delivered between Oct. 1, 2026, and Sept. 30, 2027.
A Cortland man was charged after a 19-year-old passenger was seriously injured when he fell from the bed of a moving pickup truck in Moravia, according to New York State Police. Cody B. Carroll, 32, faces first-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree unlawfully dealing with a child after police said he provided alcohol to the 19-year-old and two others before driving at a high rate of speed with them riding in the truck bed. The injured man was found unconscious in a ditch, taken first to Cortland Medical Center and later transferred to Upstate University Hospital, while the investigation remains ongoing.
