Atlas Holdings is pursuing a major restructuring that could shift the Dresden power plant from Bitcoin mining toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing data centers. The proposed $39.4 million recapitalization would sharply reduce Atlas’ ownership stake in the renamed Vulcan Infrastructure and Power while the company seeks access to as much as 260 megawatts from New York’s electric grid, including a pending request tied to a proposed 200-megawatt Dresden data center. The plan comes as the company faces mounting Bitcoin mining losses, a $33.1 million loan due Oct. 31 and unresolved environmental issues involving Seneca Lake water use, air permitting, coal ash and landfill liabilities.
Cooler late-August weather has settled across the Finger Lakes and Central New York, with scattered showers expected through Tuesday and highs mostly in the 60s to lower 70s. The most persistent rain will favor parts of Central New York, the Twin Tiers and areas downwind of the lakes, although some communities will see breaks between showers and a few heavier cells could produce small hail Monday. Wednesday is expected to bring the most dependable dry stretch before showers and thunderstorms return late Thursday into Friday.
Walworth officials are considering what to do with the town’s former sewage treatment plant property, which remains important for municipal storage while also drawing interest from New York State Police. The board also changed cemetery fees, eliminated the excavation fee for infant burials, authorized the Highway Department to fill a vacancy and placed an unidentified employee on unpaid administrative leave.
A proposed 171-unit expansion of the Woods at Valentown development is moving toward another Planning Board review after Victor’s Conservation Board examined revised environmental plans. The proposal calls for 71 for-sale townhouses and a four-story, 100-unit apartment building along High Point Drive, with discussion focused on conservation easements, tree clearing, stormwater management and potential hiking trails. Project representatives said the plans remain largely consistent with earlier versions and would preserve just under 80% of the Woods at Valentown property as open space.
The Town of Canandaigua has closed the swimming beach at Onanda Park until further notice after officials observed what appears to be a blue-green algae bloom. The state Department of Health is expected to work with the town to monitor conditions because cyanobacteria can form harmful algal blooms that pose health risks to people and animals. Officials have not provided a reopening timeline, while Butler Beach has already closed for the season because of lifeguard staffing shortages.
Geneva’s developing 2027 budget is structurally balanced under a working plan that includes a 3% property tax levy increase, with the city manager’s formal proposal expected Sept. 9. City Council also adopted new rules for alternative motorized vehicles and showed broad support for lowering the South Main Street speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph, though no final vote was taken on the speed change. Council was more divided over removing parking from part of South Main Street and also discussed short-term rental taxes, unsafe buildings and several major capital projects.
Cayuga County lawmakers advanced a broad package of spending and staffing measures as the county faces dozens of vacancies, including 13 open custody officer positions at the jail. The Ways and Means Committee supported shifting $80,000 into jail overtime, filling several sheriff’s office positions and requiring newly hired non-bargaining employees to enroll in high-deductible health insurance plans beginning in 2027. The committee also moved forward public safety grants, infrastructure projects, social services funding and other measures that will now head to the full county Legislature.
A 24-year-old Newark motorcyclist died Saturday after colliding with a pickup truck at County House and Bauer roads in Seneca Falls. Police said Maxwell Roeland was traveling west on County House Road when an eastbound pickup driven by Ian Clancy, 34, of Waterloo turned left onto Bauer Road and collided with the motorcycle. Roeland later died at a local hospital, while Clancy suffered minor injuries and the investigation remains ongoing.
New York school enrollment data shows a long-term structural decline across much of Upstate, with 389 of 400 districts analyzed losing students over 30 years and collective enrollment falling more than 212,000, or 28.5%. At the same time, economically disadvantaged students have grown from 40.8% to 46.2% of enrollment since 2011-12, not because their numbers surged, but because the rest of the student population declined faster. The result is a growing challenge for districts trying to maintain buildings, transportation, staffing and mandated services for fewer students with greater concentrations of need, raising difficult questions about costs, consolidation and regional cooperation.
