Seven Finger Lakes and Southern Tier counties are receiving a combined $6.5 million for water, sewer and infrastructure projects aimed at supporting housing and future development. The awards include projects in Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, Yates, Cayuga, Steuben and Tompkins counties and could directly support or enable more than 200 new housing units if fully developed. The funding comes through New York’s County Infrastructure Grant Program, which awarded more than $38 million to 49 projects statewide in its latest round.
The Finger Lakes and Central New York will start Saturday mainly dry before showers and scattered thunderstorms become more widespread later in the day. The steadiest rain and embedded thunder are expected Saturday night into Sunday, with locally heavy downpours possible but a widespread flooding or severe-weather threat considered low. Cooler, unsettled conditions could linger through Monday before a better chance for drier weather returns Tuesday.
A 70-year-old Cicero man was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after an ATV rolled over him Thursday in the town of Jerusalem. Theodore L. Phillips suffered head and chest injuries after deputies said the ATV struck a downed tree while he was driving uphill on East Bluff Drive, causing the vehicle to flip backward. First responders treated Phillips at the scene before Mercy Flight transported him to the hospital.
State Sen. Tom O’Mara and other Senate Republicans are urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to restore funding for rape crisis centers, domestic violence programs and child advocacy centers across New York. Lawmakers said the state’s competitive funding process has left numerous programs facing cuts, including six child advocacy centers receiving no funding and 21 receiving substantial reductions. O’Mara, Sen. Pam Helming and other lawmakers are calling for a stable, dedicated funding stream to replace the current procurement process and prevent staff and service reductions.
A Seneca County corrections officer faces two forcible touching charges after investigators alleged he inappropriately touched two incarcerated people at the county jail outside the scope of his duties. Rocco S. Bilancini, 47, of Seneca Falls was arrested Thursday following an investigation into alleged conduct that occurred Aug. 4 and was later released on his own recognizance. The Sheriff’s Office said Bilancini was immediately placed on unpaid leave while the criminal and internal investigations continue.
New York’s school vaccination requirements remain unchanged for the 2026-27 academic year despite changes in federal guidance, according to pediatric experts at University of Rochester Medicine. Required vaccines vary by grade and include immunizations against diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpox, hepatitis B and meningococcal disease. Doctors are urging families to review children’s vaccine records early and work with pediatricians on catch-up schedules when needed.
New York State has launched a tourism campaign offering Canadian travelers discounts on lodging and attractions after visits from Canada fell more than 26% in 2025. The NY Loves Canada campaign includes deals extending from late summer into the end of the year and is intended in part to offset the currency exchange rate. Canada remains New York’s largest international travel market, but Canadian visitor spending dropped 28% last year as international visitation to the state declined 6%.
Researchers at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory successfully transmitted quantum information through 13 miles of open air, marking a step toward adding wireless links to New York’s quantum communications network. The experiment connected Stony Brook’s Quantum Watchtower with Brookhaven’s Quantum Lighthouse and complements an existing 161-mile fiber network connecting eight nodes. New York has committed $300 million to a quantum research hub at Stony Brook, with officials envisioning applications in cybersecurity, computing, finance, health care and communications.
