Auburn City Council voted 5-0 to terminate the city’s contract with Flock Safety, shut down its automatic license plate reader system and develop formal rules before similar technology can be used again. Dense fog and low clouds are expected to give way to sunshine and seasonable temperatures Friday across the Finger Lakes and Central New York before wetter weather arrives this weekend. Saturday should begin relatively quiet, but showers and scattered thunderstorms become more likely later in the day before more widespread rain develops Saturday night into Sunday. Periodic showers and cooler temperatures could linger into Monday and possibly Tuesday before drier weather becomes more established around midweek.
More New York municipalities are preparing for the possibility of exceeding the state property tax cap as pandemic aid disappears and routine operating costs continue to rise. For fiscal years ending in 2026, 45% of cities reported plans to override the cap, along with 35.5% of villages, 31.5% of fire districts, 28.6% of towns and 24.6% of counties. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli cautioned that planned overrides do not necessarily mean taxes will ultimately rise above the cap, but said the trend reflects growing fiscal pressure on local governments.
Americans are drinking less than at any point in nearly nine decades of Gallup polling, creating another challenge for Finger Lakes wineries, breweries and distilleries already facing higher costs and distribution problems. Gallup found 54% of U.S. adults say they drink alcohol, down from 62% in 2023, while New York’s craft beverage industry is also contending with tariffs, supply-chain disruptions and weaker Canadian sales. Producers are increasingly confronting a market in which consumers are drinking less, shifting between beverage categories and showing greater interest in nonalcoholic alternatives.
Seneca County health officials confirmed two additional measles cases and said two other cases are presumed positive. Officials said the overall public risk remains low, particularly for fully vaccinated people, but unvaccinated residents, pregnant people and those with weakened immune systems face greater risk. The county is urging residents to check their vaccination records, noting that two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles.
The swimming beach at Kershaw Park in Canandaigua will close for the season beginning Saturday, Aug. 22, with today serving as the final day of guarded swimming in 2026. Kershaw Park itself will remain open, and visitors will continue to have access to its other amenities. Swimming is permitted only in designated areas when a lifeguard is on duty, and the beach offered free admission to residents and visitors this season.
The Village of Weedsport has received a $1 million state infrastructure grant for water-system improvements intended to support housing and community development. Cayuga County served as the eligible applicant after the county Legislature backed the village’s application, and officials said the funding will help create capacity for future residential and economic growth. County leaders said stronger infrastructure could remove barriers to housing, redevelopment and private investment while addressing aging water systems.
Residents of the Middle Atlantic region, including New York, reported experiencing extreme weather damage at a higher rate than Americans overall, according to a new Gallup survey. Forty-three percent of respondents in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania said their community suffered damage during the previous 12 months, compared with 38% nationally. The survey does not provide a New York-specific breakdown, but the regional figure ranked third-highest among the nine Census divisions examined.
